Job summary

UM Health Sparrow in Charlotte, MI is seeking a Physical Therapy Assistant to provide therapeutic treatments per the plan of care and to help create a patient-centered experience. You will instruct patients in transfers, ADLs, exercises, and home programs, document progress, and collaborate with physical therapists, nurses, and physicians to ensure quality care.

A Michigan PTA license and CPR/BCLS are required.

Qualifications

  • Requires an Associate's degree in Physical Therapy.
  • Valid State of Michigan Physical Therapy Assistant License.
  • CPR/BCLS certification.
  • Strong written and computer skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and patient communication.

Responsibilities

  • Provide PT treatment to patients per plan of care.
  • Instruct patients on transfers, ADLs, exercises, and equipment use.
  • Document treatments, progress, and discharge notes.
  • Coordinate with PT, nurses, and physicians for high-quality care.
  • Develop and support Rehab Services programs, including Aquatic and Encore.
  • Schedule treatments and refer patients to other services.
  • Train staff in home exercise programs.
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings.

Job Description

General Purpose of Job:

Provides physical therapy treatment to assigned patients in accordance with the treatment plan of care. Assumes responsibility for creating experienced-based service.

Essential Duties:

  • Consistently exemplifies “on-stage” behavior.
  • Is responsible for creating a destination, experience-based service; delivers customized experiences using patient profiles.
  • Provides physical therapy treatment to assigned patients in accordance with the treatment plan of care provided by physical therapist.
  • Instruct patients in safe transfers, activities of daily living, correct ambulation, therapeutic exercises and correct usage of exercise equipment; trains family members and caregivers on various therapeutic procedures and home exercises.
  • Performs physical therapy screenings, including range of motion measurements, assesses patient progress; recommends changes to the plan of care as appropriate.
  • Maintains communication with the Physical Therapist, nurses and physicians to facilitate quality patient care; reports abnormal physiological changes.
  • Documents patient treatments, progress notes and discharge summaries in a timely manner and in accordance with Hospital policies and insurance requirements.
  • Assists in developing, marketing and implementing various Rehab Services programs including, but not limited to, Aquatic Physical Therapy Program and the Encore program.
  • Schedules patient treatments/appointments along with referring patients to other hospital services.
  • Provides guidance and training to appropriate staff regarding home exercise programs.
  • Attends staff meetings and in-service programs as required.
  • Assists in cleaning and maintaining therapy equipment and treatment areas; notifies appropriate personnel of supplies needed to be ordered.
  • Supports and serves as a role model for our mission, vision, values, and customer service initiatives. Adheres to the organization’s policies & procedures, and compliance guidelines.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Job Requirements

General Requirements

  • Valid State of Michigan Physical Therapy Assistant License
  • CPR/BCLS certification. Work Experience
  • No prior work experience is required Education
  • Associate’s degree in Physical Therapy Specialized Knowledge and Skills
  • Knowledge of physical therapy theory and techniques
  • Knowledge of accrediting and regulatory standards and hospital policies related to the provision of rehabilitation services including HIPAA confidentiality and JCAHO mandates
  • Written and computer skills necessary to prepare required documentation
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate, orally and in written form, with patients, families, physicians, and health care professionals in the exchange of information. Presents self in a warm, professional and caring manner.
  • Demonstrates professional appearance.
  • Skills necessary to provide guidance, training, prioritize and review the work of assigned staff
  • Analytical ability to assess patient progress and recommend appropriate changes to the plan of care
  • Mental ability to complete required documentation in a timely manner, deal with the concerns of patients and their families, and handle frequent scheduling changes
  • Physical ability to stand for prolonged periods of time, transfer/lift/ reposition patients, reach/stoop/bend/kneel/crouch, and operate rehabilitation equipment/devices
  • Demonstrates ability to use a keyboard as may be required to perform the essential duties of the job.
