Description
The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital, operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH), is seeking a seasoned professional to oversee hospital security, emergency communications, and public safety operations. This role involves managing security personnel and dispatchers, ensuring seamless communication among staff in alignment with hospital policies and procedures. Key responsibilities include supervising and evaluating staff performance, coordinating staffing schedules and time approvals (SSTA), and facilitating training and professional development. Additionally, this position prepares reports and budgets and upholds a high standard of customer service across all shifts. As a critical member of the hospital’s safety team, the individual in this role may also assist in the restraint of combative patients when necessary. In the absence of the Sergeant, all Security Personnel report directly to the Chief.

Lemuel Shattuck Hospital is a fully Joint Commission accredited teaching facility that provides acute, subacute, and ambulatory care to patients referred by public agencies and private sector providers. Shattuck Hospital’s services help economically and socially disadvantaged patients to get high quality, cost-effective care from a staff that respects their dignity.
Located in the heart of Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood, the Shattuck Hospital includes 248 inpatient beds including 95 Psychiatric beds and 29 Correctional Health beds. In addition, the Shattuck has a full outpatient clinic with many specialties that offers treatment to patients of the Department of Mental Health as well as Department of Correction and House of Correction inmates and community patients.
The Shattuck hospital is on the forefront of substance use disorder treatment including a Suboxone clinic serving 200 patients. In addition to direct medical services LSH hosts and supports an array of services located on the campus, serving patients struggling with addictions and homelessness.

Qualifications

Minimum Entrance Requirements:
Applicants must have at least (A) four years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience in governmental police force or in law enforcement work, (B) of which at least two years must have been in a supervisory capacity, or (C) any equivalent combination of the required experience and the substitutions below.
Substitutions:
I. An Associate's degree with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of one year of the required (A) experience.*
II. A Bachelor's degree or higher with a major in police science, law enforcement or criminal justice may be substituted for a maximum of two years of the required (A) experience.*
*Education toward such a degree will be prorated on the basis of the proportion of the requirements actually completed.
Special Requirements:
I. Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Motor Vehicle Operator's License.
II. Appointee must be eligible for appointment as a special police officer under Chapter 147 of the Massachusetts General Laws.
S alary placement is determined by a combination of factors, including the candidate’s years of directly related experience and education, and alignment with our internal compensation structure as set forth by the Human Resources Division’s Hiring Guidelines. For all bargaining unit positions (non-management), compensation is subject to the salary provisions outlined in the applicable collective bargaining agreement and will apply to placement within the appropriate salary range
