Job summary

The Aquarium of the Pacific in Long Beach is seeking a Security Supervisor to oversee the 24/7 security department and lead a team of officers. You will serve as the lead representative of management during shifts, interact with guests, staff and vendors, and uphold professional conduct at all times.

You will supervise officers, ensure protocols are followed, and assist in training, incident reporting, and scheduling. Strong judgment, communication, and customer service are essential.

Qualifications

  • Must have a High School diploma or equivalent.
  • Must speak fluent English. Other languages a plus.
  • California driver’s license in good standing; driving may be required occasionally.
  • Previous security officer, OIC experience, or Guard Card status a plus.
  • Previous customer service experience also a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise and oversee all officer functions during assigned shifts.
  • Lead by example and ensure officers adhere to protocols while interacting with guests and staff.
  • Maintain professional, timely completion of duties and incident reports.
  • Maintain records of guard card applications, certification status, and deadlines with managers.
  • Participate in training opportunities covering de-escalation, active shooter response, evacuations, first aid/CPR, lost child/adult response, and drills.
  • Oversee the logging and storage of Lost & Found items.
  • Prepare accurate inventory records, time sheets and incident reports.
  • Contribute to annual officer evaluations; conduct frequent one-on-one meetings.
  • Assist in weekly staff scheduling and attendance tracking.
  • Promote professional conduct and discretion with sensitive information.
  • Work standard shifts, patrols, and respond to calls for assistance.
  • Report incidents to management promptly.

Job description

Minimum starting pay for this role is $30.00. Additional consideration will be given, depending on relevant qualifications and experience.

The Security Supervisor will be responsible for the smooth operation of the 24/7, seven-day-a-week security department, in collaboration with other members of department management. The supervisor will serve as the lead representative of management during many shifts. The supervisor may be called on to interact with guests, the general public, staff, and vendors, and is expected to professionally represent the department and the Aquarium at all times. The supervisor is expected to lead the Security team and demonstrate exceptional knowledge, judgment, and standards of conduct on an ongoing basis.

Essential Functions
  • Supervise and oversee all officer functions during assigned shifts.
  • Lead by example, ensuring all officers adhere to appropriate protocols and guidelines while performing their duties. This is especially important when taking a service-oriented approach to interacting with guests and AOP staff and, when necessary, diffusing conflict.
  • Ensure all assigned duties are carried out in a professional, timely manner.
  • With managers, participate in maintaining records of guard card applications, certification status, and expiration deadlines.
  • Participate in internal and external training opportunities for all officers. This will include de-escalation tactics and managing aggressive behavior, active shooter response, building evacuations, first aid/CPR response, lost child/adult response, and taking an active role in the deployment and practice of action drills (earthquake, fire, active shooter, civil unrest, tsunami, etc.).
  • Oversee the logging and storage of all Lost & Found items.
  • Complete administrative tasks as assigned, including preparation of accurate, clear and professional incident reports, proper response to employee and guest injuries, and accurate inventory records, activity reports, time sheets, etc.
  • Participate in drafting and delivering annual officer evaluations. In addition, frequent “One on Ones” will be conducted with all officers.
  • Participate in weekly staff scheduling using the When to Work system, ensuring coverage in all relevant and applicable areas. Participate in weekly attendance tracking.
  • Promote professional conduct by all officers. This includes using discretion when entrusted with sensitive information and/or when confidential situations arise.
  • Understand that this position includes working standard shifts, patrols, and responding to calls for assistance, etc.
  • Report all relevant incidents and conflicts to management in a timely manner.
Knowledge & Skills
  • Maintain a working knowledge of available resources, including computers, telephones, radios, property surveillance cameras, bag screening systems, alarms, and other systems, as trained.
  • Supervise officers in a leadership role, effectively supporting, mentoring, and developing officer performance.
  • Understanding of California Wage and Hour requirements.
  • Be able to recognize the strengths and weaknesses of the team and individual officers, and recommend solutions to managers.
  • Ensure officer adherence to the appearance policy.
