Job summary

Responsibilities

Job Purpose

Under the direction of the Director of Safety & Security, the Security Specialist is responsible for patrolling the Denver Center for the Performing Arts complex, screening building visitors, observing and reporting incidents, and maintaining the safety and security of all DCPA property, employees, visitors, and patrons.

The Security Specialist is expected to provide onsite support during performances and events. This position provides guidance while resolving security issues, maintains all security equipment to ensure proper working conditions, including cameras, points of entry, weapons screening, access control systems, and operates assigned posts to protect facility assets while supporting the successful production of events.

The operational scope includes multiple sites: two office buildings; one multi‑use live theatre complex comprised of four theatre spaces; a warehouse; one ballroom/events center; and 42 residential condominium units. The hours for this position fluctuate depending on facility activity and event schedules; therefore, the ability to work flexible hours is required.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Patrol buildings and grounds and report incidents to the Director of Safety & Security, a team leader, or other appropriate personnel.
  • Perform entry screening, safety enforcement, and crowd management. Operate weapons screening equipment, conduct bag checks, and maintain entry flow as needed.
  • Demonstrate safe work practices, follow safety rules, help prevent unsafe conditions and behaviors, and participate in organizational and departmental safety programs.
  • Document incidents accurately and in a timely manner.
  • Assist with emergency preparedness, perform emergency response duties, serve as a member of the DCPA Crisis Management Team, and act as a liaison with emergency responders during emergencies.
  • Answer emergency calls, including but not limited to medical emergencies, evacuations, safety concerns, theft, and fire; contact emergency agencies as needed.
  • Enforce DCPA policies and procedures, conduct initial investigations, and provide documentation and follow‑up regarding incidents, including theft, injury reports, and unsafe or hazardous conditions.
  • Provide safety escorts to various locations on campus.
  • Oversee lost and found property and chain of custody procedures.
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Demonstrate competency of all workstation requirements, functions, and security systems.
  • Stay up to date on developments in training methodology and security issues in public‑serving and educational spaces. Maintain proficiency in emergency response and training.
  • Respond to and handle non‑emergency requests such as door openings and closings, personal safety, and security checks.
  • Actively monitor and observe building activities using CCTV to enforce DCPA rules and regulations.
  • Assist people in buildings or on grounds who need directions or information.
  • Follow the directions of the Director of Safety & Security.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • One year (minimum) of security‑related experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work any shift, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.
  • Strong group dynamics and interactive skills.
  • Ability to communicate and work closely with internal departments and external entities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to exercise good judgment and work under pressure. Capacity to effectively and continuously work with sensitive information.
  • Must successfully obtain a Denver Security Guard License, CPR/First Aid certification, and other assigned safety and security‑related training.
  • Working knowledge and experience with common office computer systems, electronics, PCs, communication devices, and video surveillance equipment.
  • Ability to work effectively in a team‑based multicultural environment.
  • Bilingual (Spanish/English) a plus.

Working Conditions

This role routinely involves standard office equipment such as a computer, phone, photocopier, and filing cabinets. The job is ambulatory within all facilities and requires working in office settings, public spaces, event spaces, and construction areas. The employee may be on call after regular business hours and must be able to work in adverse weather.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk, hear, and communicate consistently by phone, email, and in person throughout the scheduled shift. The employee is frequently required to move around the facilities and work environment, use hands to handle or feel, and reach with hands and arms. The employee may be required to stand or sit for long periods of time and must be able to respond to incidents throughout various locations in a timely manner. A portion of time may be spent lifting, moving, and holding items up to 25 pounds.

Compensation

$22.50 per hour.
