BASIC FUNCTION:

The job of Security Officer is done for the purpose/s of protecting the safety and welfare of students, personnel, facilities, and grounds during classroom and non-classroom activities; patrolling assigned campus buildings and grounds on foot or in a District vehicle; minimizing the frequency and/or severity of harmful incidents; communicating observations and/or incidents that have a potential impact on the general well-being of students, school personnel, and/or visitors; and reporting security violations and incidents during assigned shift.

This job reports to designated administrator.

REPRESENTATIVE DUTIES:

Essential Functions

Assists in a variety of District campus security activities (e.g. fire/earthquake drills, campus lock-downs, access for persons with a handicap, traffic and parking control, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety and security on campus and at District activities and events off campus.

Collaborates with internal and external personnel (e.g. District personnel, police and emergency services providers, security services, vendors, public agencies, community members, etc.) for the purpose of implementing and maintaining services and security/safety on campus and at District events and activities off campus.

Collects and delivers a variety of people and items (e.g. sensitive documents and items, board packets, testing materials, cafeteria receipts, bank runs, payroll distribution, recognition awards, mail, visiting dignitaries, etc.) for the purpose of ensuing their safety and security.

Communicates in a strategic, customer-oriented manner with a variety of individuals and/or groups regarding security and safety concerns, topics, and issues (e.g. administrators, staff, students, parents, community members and organizations, etc.) for the purpose of providing information and/or taking action regarding investigations, criminal activities, gang activities, vandalism, etc. and ensuring the safety and security of the District site.

Escorts students, assigned personnel, and/or visitors for the purpose of providing direction, ensuring their safety, and providing site security.

Models appropriate and professional safety behavior for the purpose of reinforcing District safety standards and expectations.

Monitors sites (e.g. lock, unlock, open, and check doors, windows, gates, and other entrance and exit accesses to District buildings, properties, and facilities; set, reset, and disarm alarms, as needed, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safety and security of District buildings and facilities.

Monitors student behavior during and between class periods and at student events (e.g. lunch room, classrooms with substitutes, detention, dances, home games, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring student compliance with established guidelines, maintaining a safe and positive learning environment, and securing facilities.

Participates in unit meetings, in-service training, workshops, IEP meetings, etc. for the purpose of conveying and/or gathering information required to perform job functions.

Performs home visits for the purpose of investigating address or welfare checks.

Prepares a variety of documents (e.g. incident reports, activity logs, work orders, work/break schedules, documentation, memos, letters, procedures, etc.) for the purpose of documenting activities, providing written reference, and/or conveying information.

Provides guidance and orientation to new and substitute safety officers for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the campus security.

Reports and investigates, as needed, security incidents and crimes (e.g. write investigative reports, collect investigative materials and witness statements, secure investigative scenes, perform camera review of crime scenes, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring investigation is completed in compliance with applicable laws, guidelines, and procedures.

Responds to inquiries from a variety of sources regarding campus security issues (e.g. emergencies, accidents, injuries, over doses, vandalism, suspicious activities, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety and/or security concerns.

Transports students between home and district office (e.g. truant students, students being removed from campus, etc.) for the purpose of providing transportation to investigate or accommodate decisions by school administration.

INITIAL/MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Graduation from High School OR General Education Development (GED) equivalent.
  • One (1) year of job-related experience.
  • Any other combination of education, training, and experience, which demonstrates that the applicant is likely to possess the required skills, knowledge, or abilities, may be considered.

LICENSES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • Valid California Class C driver's license.
  • Successful completion of SB 390 training and certification, which has been approved by the Department of Consumer Affairs (DCA), Bureau of Security and Investigation Services (BSIS) with the Commission of Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). Anyone employed on or after July 1, 2021 must submit proof of training and certification (Senate Bill No. 390).
  • First Aid and CPR certificate issued by an authorized agency.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES AND WORKING CONDITIONS:

SKILLS are required to perform multiple tasks with a potential need to upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skill based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: administering first aid; operating standard office equipment and using pertinent software applications; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

KNOWLEDGE is required to perform basic math; read a variety of manuals, write documents following prescribed formats, and/or present information to others; and analyze situations to define issues and draw conclusions. Specific knowledge based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of investigation; record keeping; City, State, and County ordinances related to theft, arson, vandalism, malicious mischief; crowd and traffic control techniques; and sections of the Education Code regarding truancy and security- related issues.

ABILITY is required to schedule activities and/or meetings; collate data; and use basic, job-related equipment. Flexibility is required to work with others in a wide variety of circumstances; work with data utilizing specific, defined processes; and operate equipment using defined methods. Ability is also required to work with a diversity of individuals and/or groups; work with specific, job-related data; and utilize a variety of job-related equipment. Problem solving is required to identify issues and create action plans. Problem solving with data requires independent interpretation of guidelines; and problem solving with equipment is limited to moderate. Specific ability based competencies required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: adapting to changing work priorities; communicating with diverse groups; maintaining confidentiality; evaluating security incidents and taking appropriate action according to established guidelines; observing, detecting, and deterring improper behavior and unlawful activities; responding to disturbances and emergency situations calmly and rationally; understanding and working within scope of authority; working as part of a team; working with detailed information/data; and working day/swing/split/early morning shifts/weekends as needed.

Responsibility

Responsibilities include: working under limited supervision following standardized practices and/or methods; leading, guiding, and/or coordinating others; operating within a defined budget. Utilization of some resources from other work units may be required to perform the job's functions. There is a continual opportunity to have some impact on the organization's services.

Work Environment

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands: occasional lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling, some stooping, kneeling, crouching, and/or crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 0% sitting, 50% walking, and 50% standing. The job is performed under temperature extremes and under conditions with exposure to risk of injury and/or illness.
