Reports to the Director. Responsible for providing a safe, secure, and effective environment of care. Generally assigned to the Emergency Trauma Center (ETC), this environment is sustained by monitoring hospital facilities, properties, and functions to protect property, patients, visitors, and employees from hazards, physical harm, trespassing, vandalism, sabotage, fire, and theft. Directs visitors, patients, and employees to appropriate locations and intervenes to prevent and control disturbances.

Provides Hospital Security By

• Monitoring activities of patients, visitors, staff, and others to ensure a safe environment. Inspecting equipment, doors, windows, and gates for security.
• Responding to emergencies like fire, disturbances, accidents, criminal activity, disasters, bomb searches, etc., involving external agencies when necessary. Enforcing security procedures and maintaining incident logs. Conducting investigations and generating reports.
• Responding to alarms, call boxes, building alarms, and behavioral health requests.
• Restricting access per hospital policy and regulating parking.
• Calling law enforcement agencies as needed.
• Coordinating ETC Lock Down Procedures with medical staff during violent incidents.

Supports Department Functions By

• Providing escort services within the hospital.
• Enforcing parking regulations.
• Screening individuals entering the ETC and limiting access as needed.
• Investigating incidents and submitting reports. Documenting daily activities and reporting hazards.
• Testifying in legal proceedings regarding incidents.

Ensures Hospital Safety By

• Reporting safety hazards.
• Initiating emergency responses and alarms.
• Maintaining knowledge of safety policies.
• Participating in drills and training.
• Completing required in-services and maintaining equipment.

Performs other functions to maintain competence and department effectiveness

• Completing additional duties and projects as assigned.

Organizational Responsibilities

Attending meetings, completing mandatory education, maintaining certifications, adhering to policies, and being available for overtime as required.

Education and Experience

Two years of police or security experience, or relevant education and training in law enforcement, military police, or healthcare security.

Knowledge & Skills

License to carry a handgun in Michigan, firearms training, surveillance knowledge, valid driver’s license, strong communication skills, and computer proficiency for report writing.

Working Conditions

Exposure to weather, potential dangers, and the need for specialized training to reduce injury risk.

Physical Demands

Ability to stand for long periods, climb stairs, restrain individuals, and work outdoors in inclement weather.
