The primary role of the Campus Safety Officer at Baker College is to ensure the security and safety of all faculty, staff, students, and visitors within their assigned campus area. This involves safeguarding personal property, equipment, and real property, along with providing escort services and basic public assistance as needed. In addition to performing routine security and public safety patrol duties, the Campus Safety Officer is trained to stay vigilant in emergency situations, offering first-line response and emergency management to maintain a secure campus environment.

The Campus Safety Officer patrols assigned areas on foot, in a motor vehicle, or other specialized vehicles to ensure personal, building, and equipment security. They examine doors, windows, and gates to ensure security and monitor closed buildings for unauthorized persons or suspicious activities. Officers inform and warn violators of rule infractions such as loitering, smoking, or carrying forbidden articles. They provide escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty as necessary and offer public assistance such as lockout services, jump-starts, and routine information. Campus Safety Officers watch for and report irregularities like security breaches, facility and safety hazards, and emergency situations, contacting emergency responders as required. They remain alert for unauthorized persons and security code violators, approaching suspicious persons or notifying police as appropriate. They may also provide safe and efficient transportation to college employees, students, and visitors using institutional vehicles. Additionally, officers patrol and monitor assigned parking areas and garages to provide public security and assistance, investigate incidents and accidents, and prepare routine, standardized incident reports. They serve as Campus Security Authorities as outlined by the Clery Act, act as desk officers when necessary, and assist municipal, county, and state police agencies when appropriate.


Two years of work experience, either full- or part-time, in law enforcement, military, or security is required. An associate's degree from an accredited college or university in Criminal Justice or a related field is preferred. Officers must maintain a valid Concealed Pistol License, a valid driver's license, and certification in First Aid and CPR/AED. Officers must meet the qualifications set forth by the laws of the State of Michigan and Baker College, and they are required to carry a firearm as a condition of employment. Additionally, officers must provide and carry a personally owned quality large or medium frame semi-automatic pistol in either 9mm or .40 caliber, suitable for duty use, with the Director of Campus Safety being the final arbiter of the handgun's suitability. They must also provide and utilize a quality holster with a minimum level II retention rating, with the Director of Campus Safety determining its suitability.
