Job description

We are seeking a motivated, enthusiastic, and customer service-oriented individual for the position of Security Officer (Day Shift) at the Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC. This position is for the day shift (6:30 AM - 3:00 PM).

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Staff main public safety desks and actively monitor assigned cameras, reporting events outside of normal operation as necessary.
  2. Greet and welcome visitors, and direct pedestrian traffic as needed.
  3. Update visitor management software as visitors arrive and control/restrict access to the building.
  4. Monitor bike and scooter parking activity, politely enforce University policies.
  5. Provide security for University property, facilities, and activities.
  6. Maintain all security devices and products in good working condition.
  7. Patrol assigned areas on foot and participate in crime prevention.
  8. Respond to routine and emergency calls for various services and take appropriate action.
  9. Conduct preliminary investigations, maintain confidentiality, and write clear, concise reports.
  10. Inspect University facilities and report conditions.
  11. Provide escorts and other services, including locking and unlocking rooms.
  12. Work flexible shifts, including weekends, holidays, or special events.
  13. Cross-train for additional posts as needed (e.g., Patrolling, Command Center).
  14. Investigate security incidents/crimes and prepare reports.
  15. Notify relevant University personnel and external groups as necessary.
  16. Facilitate law enforcement and DCFEMS responses to emergencies.
  17. Coordinate with law enforcement on crime prevention efforts.
  18. Perform other duties related to security as assigned.
Requirements
  1. Completion of basic security officer training and related courses.
  2. Ability to pass a physical/health screening, including drug screening.
  3. Meet physical requirements for Campus Safety and Security.
  4. Successful background check and pre-employment drug/alcohol test.
  5. Valid driver’s license and eligibility to drive JHU vehicles.
  6. Proof of U.S. citizenship and at least 21 years of age.
  7. Ability to obtain a Security Officer license from D.C. Department of Licensing and Consumer Protection.
  8. Availability for mandatory overtime, including weekends and holidays.
  9. Ability to handle situations calmly and efficiently.
  10. Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.
  11. Intermediate computer skills for wireless technology use.
  12. Ability to complete the Campus Public Safety Institute (CPSI) academy.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma/GED and completion of basic security training.
  • Ability to pass physical and health screenings and meet physical requirements.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in law enforcement, corporate/public safety, or military service.
  • Associate of Arts degree in relevant fields.
  • Current CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Proven ability to handle complex assignments.
