Job Summary
The Security Guard ensures the safety of all museum occupants—including employees, volunteers, and visitors—by patrolling the premises, monitoring activity, responding to incidents, and deterring potential risks. This role also provides basic facilities support and assists with the setup and breakdown of museum programs and events, as security coverage permits. This position helps maintain a safe, welcoming, and functional environment where families can explore, play, and learn.
Responsibilities and Duties
Safety & Security Monitoring
- Patrol the building, parking lots, and grounds on foot to identify and report suspicious activity.
- Monitor activity using security cameras, alarm systems, and other technologies.
- Investigate and document reports of suspicious behavior or incidents.
- Enforce museum rules and safety regulations in accordance with LCM procedures and applicable law.
- Check doors, windows, and gates after business hours to ensure property security.
- Respond quickly to incidents, de-escalating situations professionally and courteously.
- Escort discharged staff, trespassers, or unwelcome parties off the premises as directed.
- Contact law enforcement, emergency responders, or medical personnel in urgent situations.
- Provide assistance to employees, volunteers, and visitors when needed.
Reporting & Documentation
- Accurately document all security-related observations, incidents, and activities.
- Communicate observations and concerns clearly and promptly to appropriate staff.
- Maintain professional verbal and written communication.
Basic Facilities & Program Support
- Assist the Facilities team with basic upkeep and minor maintenance tasks within the employee’s training and abilities, such as tightening loose hardware and completing basic equipment checks.
- Identify and promptly report maintenance concerns, damaged equipment, and potential safety hazards.
- Assist with setting up and breaking down museum programs, meetings, and special events, including moving tables, chairs, stanchions, signage, and supplies.
- Return furniture, equipment, and supplies to designated storage areas following programs and events.
- Project a positive image of LCM by promoting its culture and brand.
- Work collaboratively with staff, volunteers, and community partners to maintain a safe and family-friendly atmosphere.
- Perform other responsibilities as assigned.
Schedule
Part-time: up to 30 hours per week.
Evenings as needed, including special events.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- At least one year of professional security experience.
- Excellent observational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to use reporting software.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to remain calm in high-pressure situations.
- Knowledge of security protocols, safety regulations, and emergency procedures.
- Ability to learn and navigate the museum’s property and layout.
- Willingness and ability to assist with basic facilities tasks and program and event setup.
Physical Requirements
- Ability to patrol, stand for extended periods, and respond quickly in emergencies.
- Ability to perform necessary physical interventions within training, LCM procedures, and applicable legal guidelines.
- Ability to safely move and arrange furniture, equipment, and supplies, using appropriate equipment or team assistance as needed.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
