Job summary

Robbinsdale Area Schools in Minnesota is seeking a Security Education Assistant for Sandburg Middle School. This role covers supervision in hallways, cafeteria, and recreation areas, with focus on equity, safety planning, and crisis response. The position requires collaboration with the Crisis Team and staff.

The role includes 7.5 hours per day with paid time and a half for safety duties, per the Education Assistant contract; training and support are provided.

Qualifications

  • Ability to de-escalate and manage student behavior.

Responsibilities

  • Advocate for educational equity and safety planning.
  • Lead or support restorative practices with students and staff.
  • Communicate and problem-solve with the safety team.
  • Provide active supervision in hallways, lunch, and recreation areas.
  • Support crisis response and follow administrator direction.
  • Develop positive relationships with students.
  • Observe, record, and chart behaviors for staff review.

Security Education Assistant
Sandburg Middle School
7.5 hours per day, which includes 7 hours of paid work time and 30 minutes of unpaid lunch time
Category 4 ($26.94 per hour) plus benefits based on the current Education Assistant contract

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The following identifies the primary and essential functions of the position and is not intended to be an exhaustive listing of all duties.

  • Serve as an advocate for educational equity for all students and families, with a particular emphasis on equity in behavior and safety planning and response.
  • Lead/support students and staff during Restorative Practices.
  • Work with other Student Safety Coaches to communicate and problem solve situations together that occur through the school day.
  • Provide active supervision to students in the hallway, lunchroom, recreational areas and bussing
  • Promote and reinforce positive student behavior.
  • Respond to crisis situations, triage, and or Crisis Team as directed by Administrators as needed.
  • Develop positive relationships with all students in the building.
  • Be knowledgeable of specific disabilities and individual learning characteristics,
  • including IEPs, 504s, and PBSPs when implementing evidence-based Crisis Response Activities.
  • Assist staff in observing, recording, and charting behaviors.
  • Assist staff with crises, problems, and behavior management.
  • Other duties as assigned

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge and understanding of:
  • Trauma-Informed Practices;
  • Restorative Practices;
  • CPI holds and restraints (always relying on least restrictive interventions);
  • Ability to:
  • Physically intervene with physically aggressive students using proper procedures:
  • Proactively identify and suggest ways to reduce safety risks and liability,
  • prevent and manage workplace disruptions and improve school-community relations relating to safety;
  • Coach, direct, and receive feedback to inform staff in times of crisis/physical intervention while following IEPs or 504s.
  • Provide de-escalation techniques to students who are upset, distressed, distraught or dysregulated;
  • Work closely with building administrators to provide building security (Health and Safety Team);
  • Communicate and complete required documentation with administration about all safety concerns, critical incidents, restrictive procedures,
  • Recognize, identify, intervene, and support when students are becoming aggressive, or disorderly, due to behavior or emotional decompensation;
  • Always use least restrictive techniques;
  • Be of support in emergency preparedness activities, drills, and safety committees in collaboration with the building administrator.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • An Associate degree in law enforcement, criminal justice, or a related field (preferred)
  • Two (2) years' experience in public safety
  • Or: Substitution for the general education and experience includes having a combination of education and experience that equals four (4) years in performing duties related to public safety.
