Security Captain

General Summary: The Security Captain will oversee the day-to-day security operations at the zoo and supervise the activities of all security personnel using allocated financial and facility zoo resources. This position supports the zoo to achieve its animal care, conservation, sustainability, education, and DEAI goals.
Essential Functions:
Primary Functions:
- Responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of all shifts;
- Responsible for monitoring and rotating throughout all buildings, grounds, and animal-related areas, investigating suspicious conditions or unusual occurrences;
- Provide and manage security for all zoo events;
- Interact in a consistently pleasant and helpful manner with fellow employees, guests, vendors, and other visitors of the zoo and demonstrate the highest standards of internal and external customer service;
- Responsible for leading security investigations;
- Respond to all requests for first aid and/or CPR from guests or employees and attend to the needs of the individual requesting assistance;
- Responsible for handling alarm procedures and emergency situations;
- Provide guest control, including challenging situations;
- Assist with locating lost children;
- Set up perimeter parking controls during zoo events and parks and recreation functions;
- Review records of employee-related calls or after-hours visits;
- Remain on call 24 hours/day to handle alarms and emergency situations;
- Ensure that all established standards of professionalism and protocol are being practiced by all staff;
- Responsible for ensuring guest safety at all times;
- Perform other duties as assigned; and,
- Adhere to all policies and procedures of the zoo.
Communication (Internal and External):
- Communicate effectively with staff and the public regarding standard operating procedures;
- Coordinate with other departments as necessary to fulfill needs related to special event requests and departmental training;
- Review and investigate daily reports on employees, guests, and shift activities when necessary;
- Monitor radios to ensure effective communication;
- Monitor equipment for repairs and replacement if necessary; and,
- Attend meetings and represent the zoo on various committees.
Management of Resources (Financial, Human Resources, Facilities):
- Establish department budget and goals;
- Manage department budget;
- Achieve established department goals;
- Cultivate, evaluate, and train security staff, including discipline when necessary;
- Assist in all human resources functions for security staff, including interviewing, hiring, performance appraisals, disciplinary actions, and terminations;
- Coordinate and/or facilitate training for security staff, including First Aid, CPR, report writing, lost children protocol, and stress code response;
- Create work schedules to ensure appropriate coverage, including after-hours events;
- Process and approve timesheets for security staff; and,
- Manage perimeter fence keys (manual and electronic) and records.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Friendly and outgoing personality;
- Positive and patient attitude;
- Effective problem-solving skills, including anticipating, preventing, identifying, and solving problems;
- Excellent verbal communication skills.
Education:
- High school diploma or equivalent;
- Associate's degree in Law Enforcement or Security-related field preferred.
Experience/Training:
- Minimum of five years relevant experience;
- Minimum of three years supervisory experience;
- Tactical training;
- Good working knowledge of security operations in a business environment;
- First Aid and CPR certifications preferred;
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office software, including Outlook, Excel, and Word;
- Valid driver’s license.
Working Conditions:
- Stand and remain active for an eight-hour shift;
- Travel or walk large areas of the zoo as needed;
- Work outdoors in all seasons and weather conditions, including heat/humidity, cold, and wet conditions;
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and special events;
- Lift, push, pull, carry objects up to 50 pounds;
- Exposure to zoonotic diseases and risk of animal attack.
Equipment:
- Operate various machines and equipment, including computers, copiers, fax, scanner, telephone, two-way radio, golf carts, and vehicles.
