Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a talented Section Manager – High Speed Digital Design to join our team to create unique solutions for complex problems. With offices across the United States engaging in the defense, space, cyber, and commercial fields, Leidos provides responsive, cost-effective engineering, scientific, and IT solutions.

The Electrical Systems Department is a design-focused group of engineers specializing in advanced hardware-based solutions. The individual selected for this position will be a working manager responsible for supervising a team of Electrical Design Engineers while also contributing to programs for internal and external customers. As a manager, the individual will develop and grow their team to support organizational objectives with an emphasis on scaling and quality improvement. As a technical contributor and leader, the individual will support a variety of programs to develop electronic assemblies integrated into a diverse range of aerospace and military systems including manned/unmanned ground/air vehicles, missiles, defensive radars, and space systems. The individual will be expected to manage their time and priorities effectively to ensure both project and organizational success.

The individual must be a self-starter with strong technical skills and a proven history of technical leadership. The individual must also have excellent communication skills and a desire to build and develop a team to tackle challenging technical problems.

Primary Responsibilities:

1. Provide technical oversight and mentorship to develop team members

2. Develop strong working relationships with team members to meet productivity and retention goals

3. Conduct regular staff meetings and one-on-ones with team members

4. Scale the team by identifying hiring needs, writing job postings, coordinating screening of applicants, interviewing on-site, and making hiring recommendations

5. Architect, design, develop, and test complex PCB designs utilizing embedded microprocessors, microcontrollers, FPGAs, or SoCs to meet system requirements

6. Propose and implement ideas to improve organizational quality, agility, and capability

7. Support organizational business development goals and initiatives by providing technical input to proposals

8. Perform necessary reporting, approvals, and other administrative tasks

9. Provide technical input to program leadership during the planning and execution of engineering projects

10. Perform hardware system development from requirements derivation to employing appropriate design, fabrication, integration, and test techniques

11. Work split between management tasks and technical tasks is expected to be approximately 25% management and 75% technical

Basic Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, computer engineering, or equivalent from an ABET-accredited institution

2. 2+ years of demonstrated experience leading small to mid-sized technical teams

3. 5+ years of experience in high-speed digital PCB design and troubleshooting, including embedded processor, microcontroller, or FPGA-based designs

4. Experience with high-speed design analysis tools such as HyperLynx

5. Experience with multiple high-speed serial communication standards and memory interfaces (e.g., GigE, 10 GigE, Aurora, DDR2, DDR3, DDR4, JESD204B, PCIe, SATA)

6. Experience with technical problem solving and root cause analysis

7. Ability to decompose system-level considerations into lower design levels

8. Capability to work collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams

9. Ability to interpret schematics, wiring diagrams, and system block diagrams

10. Proven understanding of fundamental circuits and components

11. Hands-on laboratory experience with instrumentation, test equipment, and debug/test methods

12. Self-motivated with the ability to work independently

13. Strong verbal and written technical communication skills

14. Resident of the North Alabama area or willing to relocate to Huntsville - North Alabama, AL

Preferred Qualifications:

Master’s degree in electrical or computer engineering from an ABET-accredited university is preferred. Additional experience in personnel management, process improvement, project management, business development, and military/aerospace hardware design is also preferred.

Security Requirements:

Must be a US Citizen with the ability to obtain and maintain a Final Secret Clearance or meet eligibility for a Secret Clearance.
