Job Description

The Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) is a nationally recognized urban school district that serves approximately 22,000 students, speaking over 60 languages. Essential Functions

Implement 21st‑century skills into the curriculum.
Work a full duty day at the assigned location(s).
Assess student abilities related to educational goals and performance standards.
Plan and employ a variety of appropriate instruction and learning strategies compatible with the physical facility and student needs.
Manage classroom behavior and participate in student behavior management at other parts of the site.
Communicate instruction expectations, student progress, and lack of progress to students and parents, both orally and in writing.
Continuously assess student achievement and maintain assessment documentation for reporting.
Collaborate with program personnel in planning instructional goals, objectives, methods and curriculum.
Participate in professional growth and development activities, including staff meetings and in‑service sessions.
Assist in documentation of student progress by maintaining and submitting records and reports.
Ensure the classroom and instructional environment is attractive, healthy, safe and conducive to learning.
Participate in extracurricular activities as requested by the principal.
Attend IEP meetings for IDEA students.
Maintain strong knowledge of content, curriculum, methods, materials and equipment for instructional specialty.
Understand student growth and development applicable to the assigned grade.
Know the early childhood program of studies related to mission, goals and organization.
Continuously study current research and theory.
Plan and implement lessons based on curriculum objectives and student needs.
Build and maintain effective relationships with students, parents and peers, including serving as a family advocate in the district‑wide Family Advocate System and visiting homes.
Communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Demonstrate excellent human relations skills.
Possess physical and emotional ability to perform required work in a fast‑paced, high‑intensity environment.
Move around the room to monitor student work and behavior.
Show patience, caring and desire needed to work with students and parents to ensure each student’s success.
Take attendance and maintain registers per Board policy.
Follow Section 504 and IDEA amendments.
Act professionally and maintain a neat appearance.
Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Meet Kansas City, Kansas Board of Education and Kansas State Department of Education employment qualifications.
Hold a Kansas teaching certificate in the area of instructional responsibility.

Communication & Organization

Maintain communication with school personnel, parents and guardians to enhance cooperative action for student needs. Utilize existing technology effectively in the performance of duties.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and handle diverse situations with limited standardization, interpreting instructions in written, oral, diagrammatic or scheduled form.

Language Skills

Read, analyze and interpret professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations. Write reports, curricula, teaching theories, correspondence and protocols. Present information and respond to questions from administrators, staff, parents, students and the public.

Physical Demands

The employee must regularly sit, walk, stand and talk or hear. Required vision includes close, distance, depth perception.

Work Environment

The environment is typically loud, and the employee is responsible for student safety and well‑being.
