Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Perform basic, routine material handling tasks under close supervision.
• Locate, retrieve, and return material using forklifts (e.g., Hyster).
• Conduct daily pre-use forklift inspections (brakes, forks, hydraulics, horn, lights, tires).
• Operate equipment safely in a busy yard, watching for pedestrians and trucks.
• Communicate with crane operators, drivers, and ground staff via hand signals or radios.
• Ensure load stability and clear paths before moving materials.
• Report damaged or non-conforming material immediately.
• Move, position, and secure work pieces for processing on different machines.
• Pull and assemble orders based on work/shipping documents.
• Tag materials for proper identification and complete required paperwork.

Job Summary

Forklift Operator I is responsible for performing material handling and equipment operation tasks within the plant. This role works under close supervision and follows detailed instructions to safely move, locate, and store materials using forklifts and other material handling equipment. The position supports daily operations by ensuring accurate order pulling, proper material identification, and adherence to safety and quality standards in a fast-paced metals processing and distribution environment.

Job Function

• Generally responsible for completing basic, routine tasks with detailed instructions.
• Responsible for locating, retrieving, and/or returning material to designated areas using motorized material handling equipment such as forklifts- Hyster
• Performs and documents daily pre-use forklift inspections (brakes, forks, hydraulics, horn, lights, tires, etc.).
• Operates equipment safely in a high-traffic yard environment, maintaining awareness of pedestrians, trucks, cranes, and other equipment.
• Communicates clearly with crane operators, truck drivers, and ground personnel using hand signals, radios, or verbal communication.
• Confirms load stability and clear path prior to movement.
• Handles material in a manner that prevents damage, bending, or contamination, especially for customer-critical or processed material.
• Reports any damaged or non-conforming material immediately.
• Positions work pieces to be processed securely on a variety of machines using a forklift.
• Pulls and assembles orders based on reviewing work/shipping orders or other documentation.
• Tags material for proper identification and completes all required documentation.
• Moves material from receiving or production areas to storage or to other designated areas.
• May operate a yard truck for the purpose of loading and unloading trailers.
• Maintains work area in a clean, safe, and orderly condition.
• Sorts and places material on rack, shelves, or in bins according to predetermined sequence such as size, type, or product code.
• Spot checks on inventory, completes daily and/or ad hoc checks for proper tagging of material, as directed.
• Reports any irregularities to supervisor for direction.
• Restocks material.
• May occasionally drive motor vehicle (non-DOT truck) for local deliveries and parts pick-ups.
• Responsible for adhering to/ensuring compliance with applicable safety and quality standards.
• All other duties and responsibilities assigned by management.

Required Skills

• Must be able to obtain a certification to operate all required motorized material handling and rigging equipment.
• Warehousing and material handling experience preferred.
• Ability to show adequate manual dexterity, finger dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, and multi-limb coordination required.
• Ability to read and comprehend written instructions as applied to work situations required.
• Basic measurement skills, including taking, converting, and/or using measurements of length, width, height, and weight to perform basic math computations correctly required.
• Basic arithmetic skills to calculate and convert decimals and fractions required.
• Ability to multi-task, prioritize, and manage time effectively required.
• Ability to make sound decisions based on a combination of factors including knowledge, experience, and judgment required.
• Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with supervisors and co-workers required.

Compensation Range

The anticipated compensation for this position is USD $23.00/Hr. - USD $28.00/Hr. depending on experience, qualifications, and location.
