Description

General Statement:

The Summer Camp Coordinator supports the Fleet Mission Statement and Visitor Experience Philosophy by providing customer service and support for educational programming.

The role involves teaching Fleet Science Center's Youth Programs and contributing to curriculum development. Additionally, it entails collaborating with the Youth Engagement Manager to create and implement engaging STEM programs, such as offsite Summer Day Camps.

The Summer Camp Coordinator will handle administrative duties and assist in classrooms for Summer Camps at UC San Diego, San Diego City College and/or Fleet Science Center. This position will primarily operate offsite during Summer Camp and provide support for Summer Camp Operations at the Fleet Science Center.

Position Duration: April 21, 2025, to August 12, 2025

Summer Camp Dates: June 2, 2025, to August 8, 2025.
Spring Weekly Hours: 20-25 Hours
Summer Weekly Hours: 40 Hours

Reports to: Youth Engagement Manager

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

Program Facilitation & Development
  • Present hands-on workshops at the Fleet and offsite in the community.
  • Teach and support Camp and other youth programs as needed.
  • Cultivate an inclusive environment that encourages participation and exploration.
  • Promote a safe, engaging learning environment for all audiences, and maintain creativity, high energy, and flexibility under pressure.
  • Adhere to all emergency procedures in accordance with guidelines established by emergency service authorities to ensure the safety of all children.
Curriculum Development & Program Management
  • Develop and adapt STEM curriculum for diverse age groups and learning preferences, while gathering feedback to assess program impact and identify areas for improvement.
  • Assist in staff recruitment, including conducting interviews and references, while providing leadership, support, and training for ELOP Camp Educators and Science Communicators.
  • Manage camp operations, ensuring safety, quality, and adherence to budget, while coordinating materials and program space setup.
  • Collaborate with the Youth Engagement Specialist to support Summer Camp and enhance Summer Camp experiences.
  • Train and coordinate volunteers to support Day Camp program delivery.
Administrative Support
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships and open communication with staff, parents, participants, community agencies, and serve as the primary contact for ELOP program participants, parents, and educators.
  • Manage registration processes, maintain attendance for youth programs, contact lists, program evaluations and provide administrative support as needed.
  • Other Duties as assigned.

Supervision, direction, or guidance provided for this position: Performs routine duties without direct supervision. Supervision required for new responsibilities.

Physical Requirements of this Position:

Light Work: Position involves sitting, standing, and/or walking. Position requires ability to frequently exert up to 10 pounds of force to carry, lift, push, and otherwise move objects and occasionally exert up to 20 pounds of force to move objects.

Qualifications

Experience, education, or skills required of the incumbent in this position:

  1. Minimum 21 years of age
  2. Proficient in Google Suite/Microsoft Office, knowledgeable in best customer service practices, and skilled in using general office equipment.
  3. Must have at least two years of prior experience in youth programming, including teaching and leading school-aged children in hands-on activities, with a preference for youth supervisory experience.
  4. Sincere interest in and ability to work with groups of students ages 5-14, as well as parents and students of diverse ethnic populations.
  5. Proficient in both verbal and written communication, skilled in effectively leading and addressing large groups of students and adults.
  6. Must have reliable transportation, a valid Driver's License with current insurance, and be willing to drive Fleet vehicles.
  7. Enthusiasm for STEM required.
  8. Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical incidents and the physical ability to act swiftly in emergency situations.
  9. Must meet the minimum qualifications set by San Diego Unified School District (SDUSD) to serve as a Classroom Assistant or Instructional Aide. Must possess a high school diploma AND
  • Have an AA/AS degree or higher OR
  • Have completed at least 48 units of college credit OR
  • Pass the Classroom Assistant Proficiency Exam (CAPE) - If you do not meet the other requirements, SDUSD is offering the CAPE test online at no cost to interested candidates. This can be completed upon hire if you do not meet one of the other qualifications.

Upon hire the Fleet will have candidates undergo:

  • Tuberculosis Testing
  • Fingerprint clearance from DOJ/FBI required
