Job description

Boulder County Public Works Department is seeking to hire 4 (four) Seasonal Parks Technicians.

Parks Technician I is the entry-level classification in the Parks Maintenance series. The Parks Technician I performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled duties, within specific guidelines, in the development and maintenance of County parks, open space, buildings, and grounds.

These are seasonal, full-time, non-benefited positions that will work 40 hours per week Monday - Friday 6:00am - 2:30pm. These positions will work out of multiple sites in Boulder County, Colorado. Under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) guidelines, these positions are non-exempt.

Boulder County requires its employees to reside in the state of Colorado as of the first day of work.

Hiring Salary Range: $24.04 Hourly

Tentative Hiring Timeline:

  • First Round Interviews: March 24th
  • Reference Check: March 26th

  1. Performs maintenance and improvement projects on properties administered by the Boulder County Parks and Open Space Department.
  2. Operates hand tools, power tools and equipment to perform unskilled and semi-skilled tasks.
  3. Performs ongoing maintenance and repair on trails, picnic areas, buildings, parking lots, and other Parks facilities.
  4. Performs related work, as required.
  5. May be reassigned during emergency situations.

BACKGROUND CHECK & FINGERPRINTING:

PRE-EMPLOYMENT PHYSICAL:

  • Candidates for this position will be required to successfully complete a pre-employment physical.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • One year of parks or grounds maintenance experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions common to parks and building maintenance.
  • Ability to perform manual labor for extended periods of time and in all kinds of weather.
  • Ability to work effectively with other employees, agencies and the public.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

Back and Upper Body:

  • Occasionally mows with self-propelled 135 or 175 lb. power mower or cut weeds with 15 lb. power weed whacker (supported with harness), moving from side to side.
  • Occasionally shovels dirt and gravel, and digs holes for posts using clam digger and/or 19 lb. digging bar.
  • Occasionally lifts 43 lb. T-port driver (two-person lift with handles) shoulder height to drive metal fence posts.
  • Occasionally lifts eighty-pound cement bags (two-person lift) and carry to work site.
  • Occasionally lifts and positions ramps to allow tractor loading and unloading from trailer with assistance.
  • Occasionally required to lift and operate two-handed 60 lb. jackhammer to break rock.
  • Occasionally picks up and removes trash.
  • Must lift 40 lb. trash bag from ground level to truck bed height of 42 inches (could be two-person lift).

Hands and Arms:

  • Occasionally operates 2-3 lb. hand pruners held overhead.
  • Occasionally operates 15 lb. chain saw with two hands.
  • Pushed mowers, running weed eaters and other lawn care tools.
  • Requires fine motor dexterity to adjust and maintain power equipment.

Body Movement:

  • Frequently walks over uneven rough terrain either pushing, pulling, or carrying equipment.
  • Requires agility to maneuver over limbs, branches, creeks, boulders, etc.
  • Frequently requires ability to sit and drive tractor with mulcher while looking back.
  • Occasionally kneels on angled surfaces to plant flowers and do other work on the ground.
