This is work performing routine and semi-skilled duties in customer service, maintenance, repair, and construction of properties managed and operated by the Division of Parks, Trails and Building Grounds, including the Reuter-Hess property.This position is part of the career path in the Division of Parks, Trails and Building Grounds.

This temporary position is expected to run from May to September but can be adjusted, depending upon the workload needs and budget of our department.

Generally, the hiring rate is $19 per hour.Qualifications, education and experience as it relates to the position will be taken into consideration when determining hiring salary. Returning seasonal may receive a higher compensation.

As a temporary position, no benefits are available.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: (The following examples are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive.)

  • Provides general clean up and maintenance.
  • Turf maintenance, including mowing, trimming, edging, aeration, fertilization, and weed management.
  • Performs routine maintenance and operation of equipment.
  • Works closely with staff on irrigation systems performing installation and programming.
  • Preparation of athletic fields, including baseball, softball, soccer, football, and lacrosse.
  • Performsgeneral trail maintenance.
  • Performs customer service functions such as checking in reservations and inspecting watercraft for aquatic nuisance species.
  • Educates visitors about the rules and regulations and may occasionally assist the Park Ranger with enforcement.

OTHER DUTIES:

  • Seasonally clear snow with shovels and equipment.
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor for the entirety of the assigned shift.
  • Performs otherdutiesas assigned.

SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Close supervision.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES: This position does not supervise other employees.

INDEPENDENT JUDGMENT: Work is performed independently although problem areas are discussed with the supervisor prior to acting.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:

  • Must be at least 17 years of age.
  • At minimum, must be enrolled in high school or a GED program. High school diploma preferred.
  • Requires some maintenance or construction experience.
  • A combination of education and experience may be considered.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge:

  • Communication: reading, writing, speaking
  • Some knowledge of customer service, facility, park, and equipment maintenance, and safety factors is required

Skills:

  • Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skill in the use of tools and equipment involved in maintenance and construction
  • Operation of equipment and systems, including vehicles

Abilities:

  • Physical abilities as outlined in this job description
  • Work outdoors in various climates and over various terrain
  • Ability to read and comprehend instructions
  • Ability to operate pickup trucks, mowers, and tractors
  • Ability to apply common sense and understanding to carry out instructions

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, & REGISTRATIONS:Driver’s License is preferred upon hire, with complying insurance. Review of motor vehicle record may be required at time of hire and periodically throughout employment.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

Physical Work Environment: Work is generally performed outdoors in various weather conditions and in a typical office environment. The incumbent may work irregular hours, early morning, mid-day, evenings, weekends, holidays, and in inclement or hazardous weather.

Physical Demands:

  • Mows with self-propelled 135lb or 175lb power mower or cut weeds with 15lb power weed trimmer
  • Occasionally shovels dirt and gravel and digs holes for posts using a post hole digger and or 19lb digging bar
  • Regularly lift and carry up to 50lb materials. Occasionally move and carry up to 80lb materials
  • Ability to lift and position with assistance ramps to allow tractor loading and unloading from trailer
  • Ability to pick up and remove trash
  • Must lift 40 lb. trash bag from ground level to truck bed height
  • Occasionally operate 2-3lb hand pruners held overhead. Occasionally operate 15lb chain saw with two hands
  • Requires fine motor dexterity to adjust and maintain power equipment
  • Frequently must walk on uneven, rough terrain either pushing, pulling, or carrying equipment
  • Requires agility to maneuver rough terrain
  • Requires ability to sit on and drive a tractor
  • Ability to kneel on angled surfaces to plant flowers and do other work on the ground
  • Ability to perform strenuous labor for up to 10 hours a day

In the event of an emergency/disaster in or near the County, all County employees are expected to make every effort to be available to assist the County Manager, Elected/Appointed Officials and Department Directors to ensure the continued operation of any and all necessary County functions. This may mean being available to perform additional duties and hours beyond what is normally required. In the event that an exempt employee does work more than 40 hours a week in support of County operations during an emergency, such employee may receive overtime or other appropriate wage compensation in accordance with existing County policies or at the discretion of the County.
