Job summary

Qualifications

Responsibilities

• Inspect, test, calibrate, and seal commercial weighing and measuring devices.
• Inspect scales, dispensers, meters, scanners and other devices for accuracy and compliance.
• Investigate complaints of short weights, measures, and counts; issue warnings or fines as appropriate.
• Perform fieldwork at local businesses and occasional office work; may work indoors/outdoors in varying weather.
• Enforce laws fairly, maintain accurate records, and communicate with businesses and the public.

City of Methuen Employment Opportunities

The City is seeking a qualified and detail-oriented individual to serve as Sealer of Weights and Measures. Under the general supervision of the Director of the Department of Health, Human Services and Inspections, the Sealer is responsible for inspecting, testing, calibrating, and sealing commercial weighing and measuring devices to ensure compliance with applicable state and federal laws and regulations. Responsibilities include inspecting commercial scales, gasoline dispensers, fuel oil meters, vehicle scales, scanners, and other weighing and measuring devices; conducting inspections for unit pricing, item pricing, price advertising, and packaged commodities; investigating complaints involving short weights, measures, and counts; and issuing warnings and fines when appropriate. This position requires fieldwork at local businesses as well as work in an office setting. Duties may involve working indoors and outdoors in varying weather conditions, operating equipment, performing manual labor, and lifting objects weighing up to 100 pounds.

Qualifications:

A high school diploma or equivalent is required. Candidates must hold certification as a Sealer of Weights and Measures in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts or be able to obtain certification within one year of appointment. A valid driver’s license and access to reliable transportation are also required. Applicants should have knowledge of state and municipal weights and measures regulations, experience or familiarity with commercial weighing and measuring devices, and strong organizational, interpersonal, and report-writing skills. The ability to enforce laws and regulations fairly and professionally, maintain accurate records, and communicate effectively with businesses and the public is essential. Bilingual desired.
