Job summary

UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography seeks a Third Assistant Engineer to join our seagoing team. The 3rd AE operates and maintains main and auxiliary engine room machinery, stands watch, and supports all aspects of engine room operations during voyages at sea and in port.

Under supervision, you will perform routine maintenance, keep detailed logs, and provide direction to Oilers and Wipers. The role requires willingness to go to sea for extended periods, pass U.S.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in operation and maintenance of diesel engines and shipboard systems.
• Experience with ancillary engine room equipment (water makers, sewage treatment, fuel/oil transfer, ballast, HVAC, electrical).
• Demonstrated seamanship skills and shipboard maintenance.
• Knowledge of maritime regulations (federal, international) relevant to ship operation and maintenance.
• Strong interpersonal and written communication skills.
• Proficient in word processing and spreadsheets.
• Ability to read technical drawings and documentation.
• Basic math skills.
• Critical thinking and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain engine room machinery.
• Perform routine servicing and minor repairs; support maintenance of deck and scientific equipment.
• Maintain logs; train junior crew and supervise watches.
• Provide work direction to Oilers and unlicensed day workers.
• Assist with vessel operations: loading stores, bunkering, mobilization.
• Support safety and regulatory compliance; maintain credentials and training.
