Job summary

UC San Diego's Scripps Institution of Oceanography seeks a Third Assistant Engineer to join our seagoing team. The 3rd AE operates and maintains main and auxiliary machinery and supports engine room operations during voyages and port calls.

You will watch, perform routine maintenance, keep detailed logs, and guide Oilers, Wipers, and other junior crew. This position offers exposure to advanced marine technology and engagement with international scientific missions.

Qualifications

• Proficiency in operation and maintenance of diesel engines and shipboard systems.
• Knowledge of engine room equipment and shipboard systems.
• Demonstrated seamanship skills and ship maintenance knowledge.
• Understanding of maritime practices and federal regulations.
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
• Proficiency with basic computer tools and documents.
• Ability to read technical drawings and perform basic math.
• Demonstrated critical thinking for problem solving.

Responsibilities

• Operate, monitor, and maintain engine room machinery and equipment.
