Job summary

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT), a Cleveland-Cliffs subsidiary, is seeking a Heavy Equipment Operator in Detroit, MI. The role involves processing scrap metals with various tools and equipment, maintaining safety protocols, and performing routine equipment inspections.

You will operate and maintain wheeled crawlers, pedestal crawlers, magnets, and grapples, while coordinating with drivers and mechanics to ensure efficient operations in a dynamic metal recycling environment.

Qualifications

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Must read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to read and follow safety instructions and communicate effectively.
• Must be able to operate heavy equipment and perform daily maintenance checks.
• Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work outdoors in varying conditions.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain heavy equipment including crawlers and pedestal crawlers from manufacturers such as Caterpillar, Sennebogen and Liebherr.
• Load and unload materials from storage, docks, and vehicles using magnet or grapple.
• Sort scrap materials to separate high-grade metals and remove non-conforming items.
• Perform daily inspections on all equipment and assist mechanics as needed.
• Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
• Position trailers and containers around the yard and manage housekeeping.
