Job summary

Ferrous Processing and Trading (FPT), a subsidiary of Cleveland-Cliffs, is hiring a Heavy Equipment Operator for our Detroit, MI location. You will process scrap metals using a range of tools and heavy machinery, while maintaining safety and efficiency on site.

Responsibilities include operating crawlers, moving materials with magnets and grapples, performing daily inspections, and assisting with equipment maintenance.

Qualifications

• Must be at least 18 years old.
• High School Diploma or GED or 1+ years of heavy equipment operator experience.
• Able to read, write, and perform basic math.
• Ability to work independently.
• Good communication and interpersonal skills.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to follow oral and written communication.
• Ability to climb ladders or steps to reach objects.
• Ability to endure physical and outdoor work daily.
• Lift up to 50 lbs.
• Work cooperatively with others and the public.
• Expose to dust, dirt, vibrations, extreme climate and weather changes.
• Pre-Employment background, physical, and hair drug screen required.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain heavy equipment including crawlers and pedestal crawlers from multiple manufacturers.
• Load and unload materials from storage, docks, and delivery vehicles using magnets and grapples.
• Sort recycled materials to separate high-grade metals from non-conforming metals.
• Operate mobile equipment such as forklifts, skid steers, and manlifts as needed.
• Perform daily equipment inspections and basic housekeeping around the site.
• Assist mechanics in equipment maintenance and handling.
• Interact with customers or drivers to direct or assist them.
• Follow safety standards and PPE requirements at all times.
