Job summary

Gerdau is seeking a safety-focused Scrap Inspector to Charlottesville, VA. The role involves receiving, processing, and visually inspecting incoming scrap materials to determine grade and quality per procedures.

It’s a hands-on position requiring attention to detail and safe operation in an industrial setting. You will use SAP and handheld scanners, document non-conforming materials, coordinate unloading with crane operators, and maintain accurate inventory while upholding safety standards.

Responsibilities

• Inspect incoming scrap loads and verify contents against supplier documentation.
• Determine whether materials should be accepted, downgraded, or rejected based on quality standards.
• Document non-conforming materials and apply appropriate deductions.
• Identify environmental and safety hazards, including batteries, gas tanks, cylinders, and other stored-energy devices.
• Utilize handheld scanners and SAP to accurately process supplier loads and maintain inventory records.
• Direct truck traffic and coordinate unloading activities with crane operators.
• Monitor loads for potential fire hazards.
• Use handheld radiation detection equipment when required.
• Communicate effectively using radios and hand signals.
• Ensure all drivers follow company policies and safety procedures.
• Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work environment.
• Assist operations and maintenance personnel as needed.

Job Summary
