Job summary

Summit Bechtel Reserve is seeking staff to provide engaging and safe advancement experiences for Justice National Scout Camp guests. Responsibilities include instructing Scouts, presenting to groups, coordinating materials, and participating in camp activities.

The role requires 18+ year olds, comfort with public speaking, and willingness to obtain Scouting membership". Housing and a Summit Staff Uniform are provided.

Qualifications

• Minimum age 18+
• Comfortable speaking and presenting to youth and adults
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Responsibilities

• Instruct and mentor Scouts in outdoor and Scouting skills merit badges
• Present to groups of 5-20 Scouts to transfer knowledge

• Turn in advancement paperwork to supervisor promptly
• Participate in camp-wide programs and activities
• Assist with setup and takedown of program areas

• Maintain a clean, organized, safe work area
• Perform additional duties as assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by staff handbook policies and procedures

Job description

Position Overview

Provide high-quality advancement and enrichment experiences for Justice National Scout Camp guests in a summer camp setting by facilitating and contributing to fun, safe, and engaging programs.

Key Responsibilities

• Instruct, mentor, and engage Scouts (ages 11-17) in outdoor and Scouting skills merit badges
• Present to groups of 5-20 Scouts (youth) to transfer knowledge and empower application of skills and concepts
• Coordinate and collect program and instructional materials and resources
• Turn in accurate advancement paperwork to supervisor in a timely manner
• Participate in camp-wide programs and activities (campfires, evening programs)
• Assist with the setup, maintenance, and takedown of program and camping areas
• Model the Scout Oath and Law in daily interactions
• Maintain a clean, organized, inspected, neat, and safe work area
• Perform additional duties assigned by SBR leadership
• Abide by policies and procedures outlined in the SBR staff handbook

Qualifications

• Minimum age: 18+
• Comfortable speaking and presenting in front of youth and adults
• Preferred: Knowledge of Scouting/outdoor skills, including knots/lashings, camping, cooking, and first aid
• Preferred: Previous Scouting, camping, and outdoors experience
• Willing to become a registered Scouting America member (includes background screening)
• Comfortable using Microsoft Teams for daily work-related communication

Physical & Practical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, and hike, up to 8 hours daily and ability to lift/move up to 50 pounds
• Complete the Annual Health and Medical Record, including height/weight guidelines
• Housing: 10'x12' platform tent in Staff Camp | Uniform: Summit Staff Uniform | Work Hours: 50+

The Summit Bechtel Reserve (SBR) is a 10,600-acre outdoor adventure and education facility located near New River Gorge National Park in southern West Virginia. As one of Scouting America's National High Adventure Bases, the Summit provides transformative experiences for Scouts and other youth.

At Justice National Scout Camp, Scouts (ages 10-17) participate in more than 80 merit badge programs in areas such as aquatics, climbing, S.T.E.M., arts and media, citizenship, and outdoor skills. They also enjoy high-adventure activities like mountain biking, rafting, and skateboarding, as well as classic camp traditions like flag ceremonies and campfires.
