Scientist – Neurology Research (ALS Research Group)
Location: Cambridge, MA (Onsite)
Pay Rate: $45.00–$51.00/hour
Contract: 12 Months (January 2027 – December 2027)
About the Role
We are seeking a highly motivated Scientist to join the Neurology Research Unit's ALS Research Group in Cambridge, MA. This individual will support exploratory discovery research focused on understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and related neurodegenerative diseases.
The successful candidate will contribute to early-stage research involving target identification and validation through molecular biology, genomics, proteomics, and cellular assays. This role offers an opportunity to collaborate with experienced scientists, generate high-quality experimental data, and support research initiatives aimed at advancing the understanding of ALS biology and potential therapeutic targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, perform, and analyze molecular biology experiments, including quantitative PCR (qPCR), droplet digital PCR (ddPCR), gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting to evaluate gene and protein expression.
- Conduct protein-based assays and proteomic studies, including immunoprecipitation (IP) and protein quantification using HTRF, AlphaLISA, and MSD platforms.
- Perform routine mammalian cell culture, plasmid transfection, and viral transduction using human iPSC-derived neurons and established cell lines.
- Support target validation studies through immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, and quantitative image analysis.
- Conduct co-localization, morphological, and phenotypic assessments to characterize candidate therapeutic targets relevant to ALS and other neurodegenerative diseases.
- Assist with experimental design, assay development, optimization, validation, and troubleshooting to support ongoing discovery research projects.
- Generate, analyze, and document reproducible experimental data, including preparing data summaries, figures, and presentations for internal scientific discussions.
- Maintain accurate laboratory records and ensure all research activities comply with established laboratory safety, quality, and data integrity standards.
Required Qualifications
- Strong foundation in molecular and cellular biology, with a solid understanding of genomics and proteomics.
- Hands-on experience with molecular biology techniques, particularly qPCR, ddPCR, gel electrophoresis, and Western blotting.
- Experience with mammalian cell culture, including plasmid transfection and/or viral transduction.
- Experience performing protein analysis, immunostaining, fluorescence microscopy, or other cellular characterization assays.
- Strong analytical, troubleshooting, and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to independently execute laboratory experiments while collaborating effectively with a multidisciplinary research team.
- Excellent experimental documentation skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience working with human iPSC-derived neurons or neuronal cell models.
- Background in ALS, neuroscience, or other neurodegenerative disease research.
- Experience with immunoprecipitation and protein quantification platforms such as HTRF, AlphaLISA, and MSD.
- Experience with quantitative image analysis, co-localization studies, and cellular phenotypic assessments.
- Previous involvement in assay development, optimization, and target validation studies.
Education
- Master's or PhD in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Neuroscience, Cell Biology, or a related field.
- PhD-level research training or equivalent research experience is highly desirable.
