Job summary

Maya Angelou Academy, located at the Youth Service Center in Washington, DC, seeks a Science Teacher to deliver Biology, Earth Science, Environmental Science, Chemistry, and Anatomy & Physiology within a secure facility. The role requires flexibility to teach across content areas and grade levels.

The teacher will collaborate with staff to provide a restorative, rigorous learning experience, prepare lesson plans and progress reports, and ensure compliance with regulations.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in education or related subject field is required.
• Must have or be eligible for OSSE initial certification within 1 year of employment.
• Experience working with opportunity or justice-involved youth is preferred.

Responsibilities

• Deliver multi-grade, multi-content science coursework for groups of scholars in a secure facility and ensure timely delivery and grading of lessons.
• Maintain a positive, structured learning environment using restorative practices to support academic and behavioral growth.
• Collaborate with colleagues, leadership, and facility staff to deliver a well-rounded educational program and discuss scholar progress.
• Prepare reports (lesson plans, assessments, progress reports, gradebook) on time and in accordance with guidelines.
• Ensure instructional materials comply with organization, facility, district, and federal education regulations.
• Perform other duties as assigned to maintain a safe and effective teaching and learning environment.
