Job description

Position Summary

Indiana University Indianapolis University Library, https://library.indianapolis.iu.edu/ , seeks a creative, collaborative librarian to join its Educational Services Unit to contribute to a robust instruction and liaison program. The Science Instruction Librarian will have a passion for teaching undergraduate and graduate students as well as collaborating with disciplinary faculty to ensure that University Library meets their research and instructional needs. We are seeking applicants who welcome a dynamic, collaborative, and inclusive environment with a desire to impact student learning and faculty success. This is a 12-month, tenure-track position which includes expectations of professional development/creative activity, and service, with an anticipated start date of Monday, June 2, 2025.

The Science Instruction Librarian reports to the Associate Dean for Educational Services. The position will participate in the Educational Services Unit's core functions of teaching, learning, outreach, engagement, and instructional assessment.

Responsibilities

  1. Serve as liaison to the IU Indianapolis School of Science Departments of Mathematical Sciences, Earth & Environmental Sciences, and Physics.
  2. Serve as one of multiple librarians who support the Windows on Science first-year seminar course.
  3. Support biohealth and bioscience instruction and research including liaising with institutes connected to the SciTech Corridor.
  4. Develop AI literacy programs, advocate for the ethical use of AI, and support AI related initiatives.
  5. Stay up-to-date and consult with subject liaison librarians on AI, biohealth, and bioscience issues, trends, and resources.
  6. Create and maintain subject-specific learning materials.
  7. Provide and assess instructional services in assigned liaison areas with learning outcomes aligned with University Library information literacy learning outcomes and curriculum.
  8. Provide research support to faculty and students in assigned liaison areas.
  9. Adhere to IU Indianapolis University Library Liaison Guidelines, including instruction, research consultations, outreach & communication, scholarly communications (such as open access, promotion and tenure research metrics), and awareness and use of open educational resources.

Secondary Responsibilities

  • Participate in Educational Services Team meetings and activities.
  • Participate in meetings and taskforces related to Library Faculty Governance.
  • Provide support to Team colleagues when required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Compensation

Minimum salary is $58,000, with additional funding for professional development and travel. Benefits include 22 vacation days, 10 paid holidays, health/dental insurance options, and retirement contributions of 10% to a Fidelity Investments retirement plan. A start-up package includes $10,000 for moving and ongoing professional development expenses.

Basic Qualifications

Required Qualifications

  1. Graduate degree from an ALA accredited program or an equivalent graduate library science/information studies degree.
  2. Demonstrated interest in relevant disciplines.
  3. Demonstrated interest in library instruction and assessment.
  4. Understanding of information literacy concepts and trends including the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy.
  5. Ability to work successfully in a collaborative environment as well as independently.
  6. Experience with or in an academic or research library.

Preferred Qualifications

  1. Knowledge of current trends in science librarianship.
  2. Interest in AI, biohealth, and/or bioscience.
  3. Demonstrated success working with diverse faculty and student populations.
  4. Ability to contribute positively to a multicultural campus.
  5. Understanding of scholarly communication topics such as research impact and open science.
  6. Experience with the design of instructional materials, activities, and curricula.
  7. Experience serving diverse and underrepresented student populations.
