Job description

Position Summary

The School Social Worker is responsible for the social assessment of students. The School Social Worker monitors the completion of case study evaluations and participates in Individual Education Plan (IEP) conferences and problem-solving meetings designing systems, programs, and services that maximize students’ social, emotional, and educational success.

Qualifications

1. Must hold New Jersey Certification as a School Social Worker.
2. Ability to work collaboratively in a school community.
3. Ability to communicate effectively in English, orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.
4. Provide proof of U.S. citizenship or legal resident alien status by completing Federal Form I-9 in compliance with the Immigration Reform and Control Act of 1986.
5. Provide evidence that a criminal record history check has been conducted and clearance has been given by the New Jersey Department of Education.
6. Provide a sworn statement that the individual has not been convicted of a crime or a disorderly person’s offense in accordance with N.J.S.A. 18A:6-7.1 during the initial six-month employment period.
7. Pass the state required Mantoux Intradermal Tuberculin Test in accordance with N.J.A.C 63-4A-4.
8. Other qualifications as the Superintendent of Schools may find appropriate.

Job Functions & Responsibilities

1. Determines the need for Child Study Team (CST) evaluation in concert with other team members according to New Jersey state laws.
2. Participates as a member of the CST and assists in the evaluation and classifications of students according to NJ state law.
3. Provides consultation services to staff members regarding students and groups of students.
4. Consults with students and parents regarding outside professional and agencies.
5. Participates in the development of IEPs.
6. Assists in providing follow up services for students as recommended by CST staff.>
7. Specific duties of a School Social Worker include, but are not limited to, the following:
   • a. Conducts reports on social evaluations completed with students and families.
   • b. Serves as liaison between school, home and community agencies.
   • c. Makes clear, concise and meaningful presentations of the social evaluation to CST members, school personnel and parents.
   • d. Establishes and maintains liaison with a variety of community resources for purposes of referral.
   • e. Acts as a resource person to staff and parents regarding services available from the community.
   • f. Displays flexibility within the role when assigned to varying school levels in the district.
   • g. Participates in the periodic reassessment of the social workers role.
   • h. Establishes and maintains a climate of mutual trust between home and school.
8. Cooperatively plans for and provides in-service education for staff.
9. Develops a professional working relationship with school personnel.
10. Dress appropriate for position.
11. Uses correct oral and written English when communicating with students, parents and staff.
12. Demonstrates self-control, displays enthusiasm about work, maintains sense of humor.
13. Demonstrates genuine interest and concern for students through employment of techniques to develop positive self-esteem.
14. Demonstrate awareness of current trends in education and applies them when appropriate.
15. Arranges to have supplies and equipment needed for tasks.

17. Implements suggestions and constructive criticism for professional improvement.
18. Assists the administration in developing, implementing and evaluating school goals, policies and procedures.
19. Participates in in-service activities.
20. Establish and maintain open communication with parents, i.e. presentation of classification, development of IEP’s, description of program to be provided, monitoring and updating of program.
21. Performs other duties which may be within the scope of his/her employment and certifications as may be assigned by his/her Supervisor.
