The Portsmouth School Department’s Howard Hathaway School is seeking a Security Specialist substitute to help maintain a safe environment from Sept 14, 2026, through roughly Dec 13, 2026.

The role requires law enforcement or emergency response background, valid driver’s license, and ability to work outdoors and with a team. Responsibilities include room checks, visitor management, and assisting in emergencies.

Qualifications

• Law enforcement or emergency response background preferred.
• Background check clearance required.
• Must possess a valid driver’s license.
• Must pass pre-employment physical and drug screen.

Responsibilities

• Execute daily operating routine: exterior inspection, interior checks, life safety review, hazards surveillance.
• Monitor movement of students, staff, and visitors during the school day.
• Report unusual conditions and respond as appropriate.
• Maintain surveillance of entries; greet and sign in visitors, volunteers, vendors.
• Assist with directing traffic flow before/after opening hours and during activities.
• Assist in emergencies, including lockdown drills and cooperation with law enforcement.
