Job summary

Hampton City Schools is seeking a Temporary Security Officer for secondary schools in Hampton, VA. The position runs for 10 months with a pay rate of $17.50 per hour starting as soon as possible.

You will patrol buildings, monitor cameras, enforce policies, and cooperate with police and staff to keep students and facilities safe. Requires a high school diploma and the ability to respond quickly to emergencies.

Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned buildings and grounds and monitor security cameras to prevent disruptions and maintain a safe school environment.
• Maintain high visibility as students arrive, depart, and transition between classes.
• Enforce School Board and school policies on property; confront unauthorized persons when needed.
• Assist staff to stop altercations and disruptive behavior; coordinate with public safety as necessary.
• Conduct metal detector searches, participate in random security checks, and report incidents in writing.
• Provide testimony in court or before the School Board as required; support fire drills and emergency evacuations.
• Activate/deactivate alarms and secure buildings; respond to incidents across Hampton City Schools locations.

Duties And Responsibilities

• Patrol assigned buildings and grounds and monitor security cameras to prevent student disruptions, vandalism, illegal entry and other activities that detract from a safe school environment.
• Maintain a high level of visibility as students arrive and depart from school and as they change classes during the school day.
• Enforce School Board and school policies and procedures regarding the conduct of persons on school property.
• Confront unauthorized persons for questioning, route or detain them, or call police for assistance as necessary.
• Assist principal and staff in stopping altercations, arguments or other forms of disruptive or illegal behavior.
• Maintain alertness to illegal substances or weapons being carried or stored on school property.
• Participate in random security checks.
• Conduct metal detector searches for contraband and illegal substances.
• Prepare required written reports of incidents and disciplinary referrals as necessary.
• Offer testimony in court or before the School Board as necessary.
• Collaborate with and assist public safety personnel (police, fire, EMT) who respond to calls on school grounds.
• Participate in the conduct of fire drills and other emergency building evacuations.
• May be responsible for activating/de-activating smoke/fire/intrusion alarms and securing the building.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements

• Requires a high school diploma or equivalent.
• Some related security experience in a public school setting preferred.
• Ability to stand at assigned station and patrol assigned buildings and grounds for long periods of time. Standing, twisting, turning, pushing, pulling, bending, crawling, crouching, stooping, and kneeling may be required while patrolling school grounds and responding to incidents.
• Sufficient strength to restrain/detain aggressive students, intruders, and trespassers who may physically resist.
• Ability to immediately respond to an emergency in any part of the location assigned or any other Hampton City Schools location as needed.
