The School Resource Officer (SRO) is a full-time officer of the Ellensburg Police Department, specially selected and assigned to work in all six schools within the Ellensburg School District. Instead of working on a regular rotating patrol squad, the SRO works five days a week to serve the Ellensburg High School, Morgan Middle School, and all four of our Elementary Schools.
Aside from responding to school-related incidents and calls, the SRO works alongside the faculty in each building to conduct threat assessments, address immediate safety concerns, and build robust prevention strategies that ensure a safe learning environment. The SRO also engages with the student body of each school to build relationships, support students in crisis, help guide them to available resources and follow-up care, or simply be a listening ear.
To qualify for the School Resource Officer position, an officer must typically have three years of experience and be able to work independently from daily direct supervision. Officers must earn a recommendation from their Sergeant and pass an interview process to be considered for the selection. The SRO is supervised by the Administrative Sergeant and provides monthly reports regarding all school-related activity and engagement.
