Position/Job Description

SCHOOL PSYCHOLOGIST

Purpose: To provide a full range of psychological services for students including conducting psychological examinations and evaluations to determine the learning needs of students, providing leadership in promoting an understanding of positive mental health and the needs of children, consulting with the instructional staff in adjusting programs and experiences to enhance learning, counseling individuals and groups, serving as a member of the RTI team, and working with all whose responsibilities focus on the educational, social, and emotional well-being of children.

Reports To: Director or Special Education

Qualifications:

• A master’s degree or higher and the required Kentucky certificate for the assigned position.
• Completion of an internship that includes at least 50% of the time in a school setting.
• Hold a valid driver’s license.
• Demonstrate the ability to use of electronic equipment for word processing, data management, information retrieval, visual and audio presentations, and telecommunications.
• The ability to communicate effectively with students, parents and faculty both orally and in writing, using proper grammar and vocabulary.

Specific Performance Responsibilities and Duties:

• Provide psychological services as a member of the Intervention Team and ARC member in the assessment of, educational planning for, monitoring of, and re-evaluation of students in need of special services, in accordance with all applicable federal, state and local codes and regulations.
• Use observation and various assessment techniques as a certified psychological examiner to make psychological diagnostic evaluations of individual students in terms of social, emotional, and intellectual development in order to identify and diagnose learning strengths, difficulties and adjustment to problems which manifest themselves in a school setting. Share the findings in writing and orally with appropriate staff and family so that effective interventions and programs are provided.
• Prepare with other ARC members, teachers, and parents, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) for each identified student. Monitor the Plan’s implementation and participate in the annual review.
• Provide counseling in individual and group settings for students, parents, and personnel who work with the student(s). Assist students with learning to take responsibility for behavior and attitudes, developing problem-solving and decision-making skills to resolve conflict and crisis situations, and improving interpersonal relationships.
• Serve as a liaison and assist in the coordination of services between the school and the mental health professional agencies and resources in the community.
• Complete in a timely fashion all records and reports as required by law and regulation or requested by supervisors.
• Protect confidentiality of records and information gained as part of exercising professional duties and use discretion in sharing such information within legal confines.
• Perform any duties that are within the scope of employment and certifications, as assigned by the supervisor.
