Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers in Fairfax, VA, seeks a 9-month Instructional Faculty member in the School of Nursing within the College of Public Health. The Assistant/Associate Professor will teach across nursing curricula, contributing to education, research, and service, and participate in faculty governance.

The position requires a terminal nursing degree (DNP/PhD), Virginia RN/NP eligibility, and strong communication, leadership, and mentoring skills.

Qualifications

• Terminal nursing degree (DNP or PhD) or health-related field required.
• Minimum 3 years of clinical nursing experience (medical-surgical, pediatrics, or maternal/child).
• Unencumbered Virginia RN and/or Nurse Practitioner license or eligible.

For over 50 years, the School of Nursing has prepared students for interdisciplinary roles as clinicians, educators, researchers, and administrators. Students learn to address the challenges of a rapidly changing and diverse healthcare environment with hands-on experience in simulation, skill-building labs, and clinical settings. About the Position

Faculty contribute to the mission of the School of Nursing through innovative and impactful education, research, and service. The School of Nursing - Assistant/Associate Professor serves as teaching-intensive faculty across nursing school curricula, depending upon the area of their expertise and the needs of the school. Priority consideration is given to individuals with a background or experience in Med/Surg, Critical Care, or Maternal/Child Health.

Responsibilities

• Teaches clinical and non-clinical courses across School of Nursing curriculum, consistent with general and/or specialized nursing background/expertise.
• Engages in professional and academic service that advances the priority goals of the program, School of Nursing, College of Public Health, and participates in faculty governance.

Required Qualifications

• Terminal degree in Nursing (DNP or PhD) or health-related field;
• At least 3 years of clinical expertise as a medical-surgical nurse, pediatrics, and/or maternal/child nurse;
• An unencumbered Virginia Registered Nurse and Nurse Practitioner License, or eligibility to obtain upon employment;
• Knowledge of:
  • Advanced Nursing Practice: Deep understanding of nursing theories, principles, and practices. This includes specialized knowledge in a specialty area of nursing practice and understanding of current healthcare laws, policies, ethics, and economics as they affect patient care and the nursing profession.
  • Must have the knowledge and skills to teach didactic and/or clinical courses related to med/surg, critical care, or maternal/child health.
  • Research Methods: Knowledge of evidence-based practice and research methodologies pertinent to the nursing field.
  • Education Techniques: Familiarity with curriculum development, pedagogical theories, and teaching strategies specific to higher education and nursing education.
• Skills in:
  • Communication: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with students, colleagues, and the wider academic and healthcare community.
  • Leadership and Collaboration: Capacity to lead projects and work collaboratively with other faculty members, as well as participate in committees and contribute to the academic community.
  • Demonstrated organizational skills.
• Abilities in:
  • Teaching: Ability to effectively impart knowledge, facilitate learning, and assess student performance in a variety of course formats (traditional, hybrid, and distance education). This includes lecturing, course design using learning management systems, demonstrating practical applications related to course content, and mentoring students.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt teaching methods to different learning styles and environments, including online platforms.
  • Critical Thinking: Capability to engage in reflective and analytical thinking, crucial for both teaching and research.
  • Problem Solving: Ability to address academic and administrative problems that may arise in managing research, courses, and programs within the school.
  • Mentoring: Aptitude for guiding students and junior faculty members, as appropriate per rank, in their academic and professional development.
  • Collaboration and Collegiality: Ability to work in a team-based environment.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience teaching in higher education.
• Experience with curriculum design, program evaluation, and accreditation processes.
• Experience with evidence-based pedagogy.
• Record of scholarly productivity (publications, presentations, or funded projects).
• Active participation in professional organizations related to advanced practice nursing.
• Knowledge of:
  • Accreditation: Familiarity with accreditation standards for Nursing programs.
• Abilities in:
  • Clinical Teaching/Supervision: Ability to teach or supervise students in clinical coursework in med/surg, critical care, or maternal/child health.
