Reports to: Assistant Director of Student Services
Position Type: 10 Month, Full-Time
Work Schedule: Monday to Friday, 7:45AM to 3:30PM
FLSA Status: Exempt

Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing from an accredited college.
  • Current PA license as a registered nurse (RN).
  • Current certification in cardio-pulmonary resuscitation and basic first aid.
  • Experience working with children within a special education program is preferred.
  • Ability to engage intellectually and physically in all components of the work process.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative and effective working relationships with all constituents (administrators, colleagues, students, parents, and others).
  • Knowledge of correct English usage, grammar, spelling, punctuation, and vocabulary.
  • Ability to use computers and perform clerical skills at a proficient level.
General Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of the Certified School Nurse, the full-time Nurse provides school health services to students as defined by the Pennsylvania School Code, the PA Dept. of Health Division of School Health Regulations, and Vanguard policies and procedures. The full-time Nurse is expected to work collaboratively with other nurses and use good judgment at all times.

Specific Duties and Responsibilities
  1. Provides emergency care for ill or injured students and notifies parents of student injuries. In the event a student needs hospital treatment, the nurse or a designee accompanies student to Paoli Memorial Hospital and remains with the student until the parent arrives.
  2. Manages and controls acute and chronic disease. Carries out policies and procedures for the control of communicable diseases, in collaboration with the PA Department of Health.
  3. Maintains a daily log of all medication administration, student injuries, illnesses and visits.
  4. Provides medications to students according PA School Code, PA DOH Regulations, the Division of School Health guidelines, PA DOE Regulations, and Vanguard.
  5. Performs mandated screenings (BMI, hearing, vision, and scoliosis) and refers students to the CSN if retesting is required.
  6. Provides basic first aid and emergency care for staff injuries and illnesses. Immediately reports all staff injuries to Human Resources so that worker's compensation insurer can be notified.
  7. Maintains/track student immunization records as directed by the Vanguard Certified Nurse.
  8. Ensures medication authorization forms and self‑administration medication forms are completed for all medications per Vanguard policy.
  9. Verifies medical conditions and medications prior to field trips. Provides teachers with necessary information. Verifies trained staff person is assigned to attend field trip as needed. Attends off campus trips when necessary.
  10. Distributes and implements health protocols as directed by the Vanguard Certified Nurse.
  11. Notifies Vanguard Certified Nurse in case of an outbreak of disease, and checks immune suppressed students' schedule/class for possible exposure.
  12. Maintains accurate health records on students, including state medical forms, immunization records, tuberculin skin test, dental forms, medication information and release forms, emergency release forms, and reports of any accidents, examinations or screening.
  13. Manages health room medical supplies recommended by Vanguard Certified Nurse. Manages health room budget as directed by department administrator.
  14. Demonstrates competency in each of the Vanguard core values: Communication and Listening, Critical Thinking and Problem Solving, Ethics, Professionalism, and Teamwork.
  15. Complies with all organizational policies and procedures including those stated in the Vanguard Policies & Procedures manual and additional verbal and written communications provided to staff members.
  16. Maintains a professional, confidential and ethical relationship with administrators, colleagues, parents, students, and others at all times.
  17. Attends and actively participates in staff meetings, in‑service activities, and other meetings as required.
  18. Maintains proper credentials for assignment and remains educationally informed in all related areas including PDE regulations and state/national standards through continued professional study and attending workshops and conferences.
  19. Performs related duties, special assignments and projects as assigned.
