Job summary

Windham Public Schools is seeking a School Nurse to enhance student health and learning by delivering comprehensive nursing services in our district.

The successful candidate will coordinate health programs, manage medications, perform screenings, and collaborate with staff to support students with health needs in accordance with School Nursing standards.

Qualifications

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut.
• Current BLS certification or willing to obtain.
• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing.
• Proficient computer skills: word processing, e-mail, and data entry into software platforms.
• Minimum of 1 year of RN experience.

Responsibilities

• Establish and maintain the school health office to deliver comprehensive health services according to Nursing Standards and policies.
• Provide case management for students with special healthcare needs, including medication administration.
• Develop and train staff on Emergency Action Plans for potentially life-threatening conditions.
• Provide episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students.
• Maintain immunization compliance and conduct mandated health screenings.
• Participate in Child Find and interprofessional student support teams.
• Develop individualized health goals for students receiving special education or 504 accommodations.
• Coordinate building medical emergency response and communicate with families and staff.
• Maintain health records in the electronic health system and ensure confidentiality.

Job description

Position Title: School Nurse

Schedule: Full-Time, 10 months, per School Year Calendar, 7.5 hours daily

Position Function and Purpose: Enhance the educational process by removing health barriers to learning through planning, implementing, coordinating, monitoring, and evaluating health services in a specific school(s) assignment. Promote the health of the student body, staff, and school community.

Pay: per the Windham Federation of School Nurses contract.

Accountability: Reports dually to health services nursing supervisor and building principal per the WFSN contract.

Qualifications:

• Current licensure as a Registered Nurse in the State of Connecticut
• Current BLS certification or willing to obtain
• Graduate of an accredited school of Nursing
• Proficient computer skills: word processing, e-mail, and data entry into software platforms
• Minimum of 1 year of RN experience

Preferred:

• Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing

Major Responsibilities

Duties include but are not limited to the following:

• Establish and maintain the school health office to deliver comprehensive school health services according to School Nursing Standards of Practice, the state nurse practice act, and departmental procedures and protocols.
• Provide case management of students with special healthcare needs, including administration of medications and special procedures according to medical orders.
• Develop and train need-to-know school staff on Emergency Action Plans for students with potentially life-threatening conditions.
• Provide episodic and emergency health care to ill or injured students
• Maintain communicable disease prevention and control measures in accordance with state regulations, local health department protocols, district policies, and departmental protocol. Report communicable disease outbreaks to the district medical advisor, nurse supervisor, and, if applicable, the local health department.
• Manage student immunization compliance.
• Conduct state-mandated health and developmental screening.
• Participate in Child Find.
• Serve as a member of the interprofessional student support team
• Develop and implement individualized health goals and interventions for students receiving special education services or Section 504 Plan accommodations.
• In collaboration with building administrator, organize and manage building medical emergency response team.
• Communicate with students, families, and staff in a culturally sensitive manner.
• Document all student health information in the electronic health record according to department guidelines and procedures.
• Maintain student confidentiality and privacy according to HIPAA and FERPA.

Days: Monday – Friday
