Job description

Mission Statement School Health Program

The mission of the School Health Program in Danbury Public Schools is to protect and improve the health and educational success of students, thereby enhancing the overall quality of life for the school community. This is achieved through a comprehensive school nursing program that emphasizes prevention, early detection, education, and effective resolution of health‑related issues.

Responsibilities
  • Serve as a member of the school team as the designated health professional, including participation in Planning and Placement Teams (PPT), Section 504 Teams, and Crisis Teams.
  • Maintain accurate, comprehensive, and well‑organized records, logs, surveys, and reports in accordance with State of Connecticut requirements and Danbury Board of Education policies.
  • Confer with parents, students, teachers, support staff, and other professionals to interpret health and developmental assessments and monitor students with special needs to support school placement and success.
  • Supervise compliance with Connecticut state‑mandated physical examinations and immunization requirements.
  • Coordinate administration of prescribed medications and treatments for students during school hours and school‑sponsored activities; train designated staff in medication administration per Connecticut State regulations.
  • Conduct vision, hearing, and postural screenings in accordance with Connecticut State regulations, and complete referrals and follow‑up for identified concerns.
  • Develop Individualized Health Care Plans (IHCPs) for students with special health needs and integrate them into IEP and 504 plans as appropriate.
  • Provide annual in‑service training for staff, including OSHA Bloodborne Pathogens and Infection Control. Serve as a resource to staff regarding health promotion and disease prevention.
  • Maintain current knowledge of school nursing practices and Connecticut laws related to immunizations, medication administration, health records, and related health requirements.
  • Provide emergency care and treatment for injured or ill students and staff.
  • Assist families in accessing medical homes, HUSKY Health insurance, immunizations, dental care, and other health‑related services.
  • Attend staff meetings as scheduled and perform additional nursing and professional duties as required.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid State of Connecticut Registered Nurse (RN) license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) preferred, but not required.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of clinical nursing experience, preferably in pediatrics and/or community health.
