Job summary

Harrison County Schools seeks a Substitute Cook to join the Nutrition Services team. The role is governed by the Harrison County Service Salary Schedule and entails serving federally approved meals within a 200-day employment term at the Central Office location.

Primary duties include food preparation, sanitation, and adherence to policies, with opportunities to assist other cooks and to participate in workshops and training. Closing date is 06/30/2027.

Qualifications

• Minimum qualifications: Personnel employed as a cook’s helper.

Responsibilities

• Become acquainted with the policies of the school and with the duties assigned.
• Be interested in the school and in the welfare of the children.
• As a part of the school staff, assist in establishing good public relations.
• Observe the working hours, operating policies and all established local, state and federal regulations.
• Maintain all lunchroom and kitchen equipment in a clean, sanitary manner.
• Utilize all government-donated foods to the fullest extent possible, observing the first-in, first-out policy.
• Consider the school lunchroom and kitchen as a “workshop” and strive to work carefully and efficiently, observing all nutritional requirements and sanitary standards in the preparation and services of federally approved meals.
• Be responsive to the suggestions of the principal and the school lunch supervisor.
• Attend all county school lunch workshops and training programs, as required and strives to upgrade job performance by implementing the suggestions and lessons given during these meetings.
• Be neatly dressed in a washable uniform and wear a hairnet while performing duties in the kitchen.
• Follow proper procedures in the storage of food and supplies.
• Report any equipment needing repairs.
• Assist other cooks in kitchen or dining areas.
• Study the technical and educational materials provided by the state and county departments of education.
• Be available, if possible, for kitchen related activities outside the normal working day if requested to do so under reasonable terms by the county administration.
• Work to establish and maintain good rapport at all times.
• Perform the duties of Cook III in the absence of Cook III.
• Perform such other tasks and assume other responsibilities as the Superintendent or immediate supervisors may from time to time, assign.
