Job Description

Role Summary

The SHA reports to the building principal, school site administrator or school health manager and provides day‑to‑day support of students, including health and physical services, medication administration, first aid, record keeping and clerical duties.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience providing the required skill and knowledge for successful performance is acceptable. Prior work experience with ill, injured, or chronically ill children or adolescents in a school or other setting is preferred; personal care technician or similar profession is a plus.

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Successful completion of college‑level coursework or passing the Parapro Assessment examination as required by the No Child Left Behind Act.
• Must pass FBI and BCI background checks.
• Ability to obtain an Educational Aide Permit with the ESEA Endorsment from the Ohio Department of Education (ODE).
• Prior experience working with children desirable.

Responsibilities

• Communicate effectively, problem‑solve and work independently.
• Maintain student records related to immunizations, chronic illness, etc.
• Administer medications, document administration, obtain and maintain consents.
• Coordinate and provide vision, dental, hearing and BMI screening; document results and communicate failures to parents/guardians; follow up on screening failures.
• Perform diabetes care, including:
  • Checking blood glucose by finger stick
  • Calibrating and cleaning blood glucose monitors
  • Administering insulin per provider orders
  • Obtaining all necessary paperwork to provide care
  • Documenting care as directed by medical provider
• Perform first aid using the Emergency Guidelines for Schools published by the Ohio Department of Health.
• Accurately document student encounters and maintain documentation per guidelines.
• Stock and maintain the health room.
• Lifting of patient, equipment or other items up to 60 pounds independently, up to 250 pounds with one or two persons assist or hydraulic lift.
• Perform other duties as assigned by Principal/Manager or designee.

Employment Provisions

Salary: $21.85 per hour (AFSCME contract). Service Period: School year only – 7 hours daily.
