Job summary

Hawaiʻi State Department of Education invites applications for School Health Assistant I/II to support student health services in schools. The role is full-time at 6½ hours per day, with the authorized level being School Health Assistant II.

Duties include first aid, medication administration per guidelines, health screenings and liaison with parents and staff. Position requires basic education and experience in health-related settings; substitutions available for nursing or medical assisting

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent demonstrated ability to read, comprehend and apply written instructions; and a high degree of verbal skill.
• General Experience: work with people, establish relationships, may involve counseling, teaching or serving as a resource; can be paid or volunteer.
• Specialized Experience: basic health knowledge and practices and ability to use a computer or data processing systems.
• Substitutions include nursing/medical assisting study or related programs substituting for experience.

Responsibilities

• Administers emergency first aid to ill or injured students.
• Takes temperature, monitors health room and rest periods as needed.
• Administers medications per program guidelines with approval.
• Contacts parents/guardians regarding illness or injury.
• May call for ambulance in emergencies and perform health-related screening tests.
• Completes health records and refers issues to the school health nurse.
• Maintains clean health room and coordinates wellness information for staff.
