Job description

School Health Assistant II

Full‑time at 6½ hours per day. Salary: $2,549.00 per month.

Responsibilities
  • Administers emergency first aid care to ill or injured students.
  • Takes temperature, permits students to rest in the health room as necessary, and periodically observes and talks to students to determine symptoms of illness.
  • May administer oral and topical medications only in accordance with strict program guidelines (parental request, physician's order, school health nurse’s approval, and school administration approval).
  • Contacts parents or guardians of ill or injured students to inform them of their child’s illness or injury when necessary.
  • May call for ambulance service in emergencies.
  • As directed by the school health nurse, performs various health‑related screening tests such as hearing and vision screening, participates in health surveys, takes throat swabs for rheumatic fever surveys, and measures heights and weights of students.
  • Completes appropriate records and refers health records indicating health problems to the school health nurse.
  • Performs visual surveys of school buildings and grounds that may have contributed to injuries and works with the school health nurse and principal to correct any hazardous conditions.
  • May give basic health instruction to students.
  • May orient and supervise volunteers to assist in conducting screening tests.
  • Provides emergency first aid care to school staff and administers CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean health room, ensuring adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Provides resource information to school staff when requested, recognizing at‑risk symptoms for referral to appropriate staff.
  • Acts as a liaison between home, school, and community to collaborate on health services and activities.
  • Coordinates health‑related speakers to aid the class curriculum when requested.
  • Disseminates and coordinates information on wellness activities and events for staff members at the discretion of the principal.
  • Advocates a positive and informative health and wellness program for the school.
Qualifications

Basic Education Requirements: High‑school diploma or equivalent with strong reading, comprehension, and verbal skills.

Experience Requirements: Minimum 1 year of general experience and 2 years of specialized health experience (total 3 years). Experience must involve working with people, providing information, supervising, or collaborating on health or therapeutic activities. Substitutions: a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing or a related field (1 year general + 2 years specialized), completion of a community college medical‑assisting program (1 year general + 1 year specialized), or advanced coursework in health and personal hygiene (1 year specialized).

Certification Requirement: Current First Aid certification and current certification in Child and Adult Cardio‑Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).

Salary and Benefits

Salary: $2,549.00 per month for full‑time employment (includes shortage and school‑year differentials where applicable).
