Job description

Position Overview

School Health Assistant II – full‑time (6½ hours per day). Salary: $2,549.00 per month.

Responsibilities
  • Administer emergency first‑aid care to ill or injured students.
  • Take temperature, allow students to rest in the health room, observe and talk with students to determine symptoms of illness.
  • Administer oral and topical medications only in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Contact parents or guardians of ill or injured students to inform them of their child’s illness or injury.
  • Call for ambulance service in emergencies.
  • Perform health‑related screening tests on students, including hearing, vision, throat swabs, and height/weight measurements.
  • Complete appropriate records; refer health records indicating problems to the school health nurse.
  • Conduct visual surveys of school buildings; work with the school health nurse and principal to correct hazardous conditions.
  • Give basic health instruction to students.
  • Orient and supervise volunteers for screening tests.
  • Render emergency first‑aid care to staff; administer CPR as necessary.
  • Maintain a clean health room with adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Provide resource information to staff when requested; recognize at‑risk symptoms for referral.
  • Act as liaison between home, school, and community health services.
  • Coordinate health‑related speakers and wellness activities for staff.
  • Advocate a positive and informative health and wellness program for the school.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; demonstrates reading, comprehension, and verbal skills.
  • Current certifications in first aid and in child and adult CPR.
Experience Requirements

The following experience levels must be met:

  • 1 year of general experience involving people‑centered work and establishing working relationships.
  • 2 years of specialized experience demonstrating basic health knowledge and computer use.
  • Combined total of 3 years of experience.

Substitutions:

  • Completion of a bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing or related field substitutes one year of general experience and two years of specialized experience.
  • Completion of a community college program in medical assisting, human services, practical nursing, or a similar curriculum substitutes one year of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Completion of formal coursework in health and personal hygiene substitutes one year of specialized experience.
Certification Requirements

All applicants must possess current certifications in:

  • First aid.
  • Child and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
