Job Overview

School Health Assistant II – full‑time position, 6½ hours per day.

Salary Range

School Health Assistant II, SR-11: $2,549.00 per month.

Examples of Duties
  • Administers emergency first aid care to ill or injured students.
  • Takes temperature, permits students to rest in health room, observes and talks to students to determine symptoms of illness.
  • Administers oral and topical medications only in accordance with strict program guidelines.
  • Contacts parents or guardians of ill or injured students to inform them of their child's condition.
  • Calls for ambulance service in emergencies.
  • Performs health‑related screening tests (hearing, vision, throat swabs, height and weight measurements) as directed by the school health nurse.
  • Completes appropriate records and refers health records indicating health problems to the school health nurse.
  • Surveys school buildings and grounds for injury hazards and works with the school health nurse and principal to correct conditions.
  • Provides basic health instruction to students and may orient and supervise volunteers for screening tests.
  • Provides emergency first aid care to school staff and administers CPR as necessary.
  • Maintains a clean health room with adequate supplies and equipment.
  • Provides resource information to staff and recognizes at‑risk symptoms for referral.
  • Acts as liaison between home, school and community in health services/activities.
  • Coordinates health‑related speakers to aid class curriculum.
  • Disseminates and coordinates wellness information to employees.
  • Advocates a positive and informative health and wellness program for the school.
Minimum Qualifications – Basic Education

High school diploma or equivalent with demonstrated reading, comprehension, written instructions, and high verbal skill.

Experience Requirements

Applicants must meet the experience table below and possess the overall scope and responsibility level required to perform the duties. Total required experience: 3 years.

  • General Experience: One year of work with people (person‑to‑person relationships).
  • Specialized Experience: Two years of work demonstrating basic health knowledge and data‑processing skills.
  • Total Experience: Three years.
Substitutions Allowed
  • Bachelor’s or associate’s degree in nursing or related field may substitute one year of general experience and two years of specialized experience.
  • Community college program in medical assisting, human services, practical nursing, or similar may substitute one year of general experience and one year of specialized experience.
  • Formal coursework in health and personal hygiene, child care, or home management may substitute one year of specialized experience.
Quality of Experience

Experience must demonstrate scope and responsibility that conclusively shows ability to perform the position duties. Mere possession of required years of experience is insufficient.

Certification Requirement
  • Current certification in first aid.
  • Current certification in child and adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
Salary Summary

The advertised salary is based on full‑time employment and includes shortage and school‑year differentials, if applicable.

Requirements

Applicants must meet all specified education, experience, and certification requirements. Part‑time experience is prorated; hours exceeding 40 per week are not credited.

Temporary Assignment

Claims of temporary assignment (TA) experience must be verified with one of the following: TA history report, signed supervisor letter, or SF‑10 form copies.

Temporary Positions
