Job summary

Town of Groton Police Department is seeking two part-time School Crossing Guards in Groton, CT. The position involves directing and controlling vehicle and pedestrian traffic at school crossings and may include issuing citations when authorized. It is a part-time, seasonal role, up to 12 hours per week.

Starting rate is $17.50 per hour, with a position range of $17.50–$19.25 per hour. Regular attendance is required; background checks and driving record checks may be required prior to employment.

Qualifications

• Understand written and oral instructions; establish courteous relationships; obtain cooperation from children.
• Enforce instructions effectively and firmly.
• Stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift up to 20 pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral, and depth perception.
• Regular attendance is required.
• Experience working with children preferred.

Responsibilities

• Direct and control traffic at crossings used by school children.
• Direct traffic flow to ensure safety at intersections; may issue citations when authorized.
• May be required to perform duties related to child safety outside crossings and outside school hours with authorization.

POSITION RANGE:

$17.50 - $19.25 / hour

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The School Crossing Guard directs and controls the flow of vehicle and/or pedestrian traffic at crossings primarily used by school children. When authorized, the Crossing Guard may issue citations for violations of traffic regulations, or for failure to comply with directions. The Crossing Guard may be required to perform duties related to the safety of children in areas other than at crossings and at times other than during school hours provided that such assignments have been properly authorized.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Must be able to understand written and oral instructions, establish and maintain effective and courteous working relationships with stakeholders, and obtain cooperation from children.
• Must be able to enforce instructions effectively and firmly.
• Must be able to stand, walk, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, and lift up to twenty pounds.
• Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Regular attendance is required.
• Experience working with children preferred.
