Job summary

Near North Montessori School in Chicago seeks a School Counselor to provide developmentally appropriate social-emotional support for students across all levels, collaborating with families, teachers, and outside mental health professionals.

The role emphasizes non-clinical, school-based support within a vibrant educational community, reporting to the Director of Student Wellness. A Master’s degree and IL licensure are required.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in social work, school counseling, or psychology.
• 3+ years experience providing direct support to children, adolescents and families.
• Illinois Licensed mental health professional in Clinical Social Work, Counseling Psychology, Educational Psychology, or Marriage and Family Therapy.
• Excellent communication skills, sound judgment and emotional maturity.
• Demonstrated ability to work well with teams.

Responsibilities

• Provide individualized, developmentally appropriate social-emotional support to students experiencing emotional, behavioral, interpersonal, or adjustment-related challenges.
• Support students in developing emotional awareness, self-regulation, coping strategies, problem-solving skills, resilience, and positive peer relationships.
• Facilitate individual and small-group social-emotional skill-building lessons.
• Maintain and support the mindfulness space for students to manage emotions and return to learning.
• Provide school-based, non-clinical student support aligned with policies and role responsibilities.
• Establish collaborative relationships with parents and caregivers to support social-emotional development.
• Consult with families regarding concerns and strategies to promote home–school consistency.
• Provide parent education on child development, emotional regulation, behavior, and mental health.
• Help families access community-based mental health services and outside resources.
• Collaborate with outside therapists and professionals to support coordinated care.
• Serve as a resource for teachers and staff on child development and social-emotional learning.
• Participate in Student Support Team meetings and case planning.
• Develop individualized school-based behavioral and social-emotional support plans.
• Respond to mental health concerns using clinical judgment and school protocols.
• Maintain documentation and confidentiality in accordance with laws and policies.
• Engage in professional development to stay current in child mental health and school practice.
