The City of Harrisonburg is seeking a School Car Driver for the Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation. This full-time role offers benefits and a starting pay of $17.92 per hour.

CDL is not required, and candidates must be available for at least 6 hours per day, Monday through Friday, to transport students to regional cities such as Staunton, Charlottesville, Edinburg, and Lexington. Routes vary by day and are assigned on hire based on business needs.

The School Car Driver is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred hiring rate of $17.92 per hour. The ideal candidate for this position must have a driving record in accordance with City policy and be available for at least 6 hours per day (Monday - Friday) to drive students from Harrisonburg to regional cities for individualized educational opportunities. While each route is different, sample destinations may include Staunton, Charlottesville, Edinburg, and Lexington. Route assignments are made upon hire and determined by business needs. A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) is not required for this position.

As a School Car Driver, you'll provide safe, dependable transportation for students along an assigned route, helping ensure they arrive at school and home comfortably and on time. You will assist students as they board and exit the vehicle, maintain a welcoming and orderly environment, and respond professionally to changing traffic conditions, vehicle needs, or passenger emergencies using radio communication. Responsibilities also include completing pre-trip vehicle inspections, reporting maintenance or equipment concerns, and keeping your medium-sized passenger vehicle clean, fueled, and ready for each day’s route.

The selected candidate for this position will be subject to the following screenings and must receive satisfactory results:

• Criminal background check;
• DMV record review;
• Virginia Department of Education physical examination;
• Alcohol and controlled substances testing as required by the City of Harrisonburg.
