Job summary

The City of Harrisonburg is hiring a full-time School Bus Driver to transport students safely to and from school. The role offers benefits and a starting hourly rate of $19.54.

The 10-month position is paid over 12 months, with on-the-job CDL training provided if needed. Candidates must be available for 6.25 hours per day, 180 days per year.

Duties include driving, pre-trip inspections, reporting deficiencies, keeping the bus clean, and ensuring passenger safety on field trips and special events.

Qualifications

Job description

If you answered yes to both of these questions, the Department of Public Transportation's School Bus Driver position may be the right career for you!

The School Bus Driver is a full-time position with benefits and a preferred starting hourly rate of $19.54 per hour. Paid on-the-job training will be provided for candidates without a CDL and/or prior experience.

The position is required to work 10-months out of the year and will be paid for the work hours over a 12-month period, allowing benefits to continue during the summer break. The ideal candidate must be available for a minimum of 6.25 hours per day/180 days per year with additional hours potentially available throughout the year within the same department.

As a School Bus Driver, you’ll:

  • Drive a school bus and pick up and deliver students to/from school;
  • Perform pre-trip inspections of the school bus;
  • Report operating and equipment deficiencies;
  • Clean the inside of the bus;
  • Fuel the bus;
  • Maintain discipline on the bus;
  • Ensure passenger safety;
  • Transport students to special events and field trips, as necessary.

  • High school diploma or GED and some experience operating buses or similar equipment and in dealing with the public, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Possession of or ability to acquire an appropriate commercial driver’s license valid in the Commonwealth of VA by the end of your HDPT classroom training for this position, or as deemed appropriate by the department.

  • Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) Clearinghouse query;
  • FMCSA pre-employment drug screening;
