Job summary

Beacon Mobility in Las Cruces, NM is seeking a Mechanic to inspect, diagnose, repair, and maintain school buses and district vehicles to ensure safe, reliable transportation for students.

The ideal candidate will have a high school diploma or equivalent, up to 1 year of maintenance experience, knowledge of diesel engines and electrical systems, a valid driver’s license, and ideally a CDL with School Bus endorsements or the ability to obtain them.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• 1 year of experience in bus, diesel, automotive, fleet, truck, or heavy equipment maintenance preferred.
• Knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, brakes, steering, suspension, and preventative maintenance practices.
• Ability to diagnose mechanical and electrical issues and perform repairs efficiently.
• Ability to maintain accurate maintenance and inspection records.
• Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
• Valid driver’s license required.
• CDL with School Bus and Passenger endorsements preferred or ability to obtain within a specified timeframe.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventative maintenance, inspections, and repairs on school buses, support vehicles, and transportation equipment.
• Diagnose and repair mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, brake, steering, suspension, heating, and engine-related issues.
• Conduct routine safety inspections to ensure vehicles meet federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
• Communicate with drivers and transportation staff regarding vehicle performance concerns and maintenance needs.
• Complete work orders, inspection reports, maintenance records, and repair documentation accurately and timely.
• Perform scheduled maintenance services, including fluid changes, tune-ups, brake service, tire maintenance, and component replacements.
• Assist with preparing repair estimates and identifying parts required for maintenance and repair activities.
• Respond to road calls, emergency repairs, and vehicle breakdowns as needed.
• Maintain shop tools, equipment, and work areas in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
• Follow district policies, maintenance procedures, and workplace safety standards.
• Participate in required technical and safety training.
• Support transportation operations and perform other duties as assigned.
