Job summary

South Carolina Department of Education (SCDE) Transportation seeks an experienced Assistant Service Manager to lead daily school bus maintenance at the Charleston Service Center. The role combines hands-on diagnostics with supervision, scheduling, and compliance to keep fleets safe and reliable.

The ideal candidate has 2+ years of mechanical repair experience, ability to obtain CDL, and proficiency with diagnostic equipment.

Qualifications

• Two years of mechanical or automotive repair experience or equivalent training.
• Ability to obtain and maintain a Class A or B CDL with endorsements within 120 days.
• Ability to operate power, hydraulic, electronic and computerized diagnostic equipment.
• Pass required drug screenings, background checks, and USDOT medical exam.

Responsibilities

• Perform preventive maintenance and repairs to keep fleet assets service-ready and documented.
• Diagnose and repair engines, brake, electrical, cooling, exhaust, and transmissions as needed.
• Diagnose and service HVAC systems and climate-control equipment.
• Schedule tasks, assign workloads, and coordinate with the Service Manager.
• Provide hands-on instruction, mentoring, and guidance to technicians.
• Ensure safety compliance with OSHA, environmental and PPE requirements.
• Coordinate inventory, parts usage, and shop needs for reliability.
• Lead shop operations and maintain accurate maintenance records in AssetWorks.
