Overview

The Transportation Program strives to improve student achievement by providing safe, timely, and cost-effective transportation for all eligible students in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, as well as City ordinances and the City of Chicago’s Board of Education’s policies and procedures.

Class Title

School Bus Aide

Responsibilities
  • Under immediate supervision, assist students riding on the school bus to and from school and perform related duties as required.
  • Fasten and secure seatbelts, harnesses, and other safety equipment; maintain order on the school bus to minimize driver distraction and create a safe environment.
  • Report any event, injury, or misbehavior that may jeopardize the safe transport of a student to and from school to appropriate personnel.
  • Complete routing lists and related transportation forms to communicate the sequence of bus stops.
Qualifications
Training and Experience

High school diploma or GED equivalent.

Knowledge, Abilities and Skill
  • Ability to work autonomously while exercising good judgment and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to operate safety equipment.
  • Demonstrate patience and empathy in order to successfully interact with various student populations, parent/guardians, and school administration.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.
Physical Requirements

Frequent walking, stooping, bending, kneeling, pushing and pulling. Exerts twenty (20) to fifty (50) pounds of force occasionally. Works outside and inside with moderate exposure to extreme temperatures. May work around vehicles and machinery with moving parts.

Preferred Skills
  • General knowledge of disabilities listed within the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.
  • Skilled in communicating with school-aged children.
