Job description

The Emma L. Bowen Community Service Center is a nonprofit, community-based organization founded in 1969 that provides comprehensive behavioral health and supportive services in a caring environment. The Center’s mission is to help individuals and families of all ages address “problems of living” so they can function effectively and productively. Services are delivered by a multidisciplinary team of culturally competent professionals, including psychiatrists, psychologists, social workers, nurses, counselors, case managers, vocational specialists, and early childhood teachers. The Center has multilingual staff fluent in Spanish and French, supporting diverse communities. It is licensed by multiple New York City and New York State agencies, including the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Office of Mental Health, Alcoholism & Substance Abuse Services, and Department of Education.

Role Description

This full-time, on-site School-Based Therapist role is located in New York, NY and involves providing direct behavioral health services to students within school settings. The therapist conducts assessments, develops and implements treatment plans, and delivers individual, group, and family therapy to address emotional, behavioral, and social challenges impacting academic performance and wellbeing. Day-to-day responsibilities include collaboration with school personnel, coordination of care with families and community providers, and participation in interdisciplinary team meetings. The therapist maintains accurate clinical documentation, monitors progress toward treatment goals, and ensures services comply with agency, school, and regulatory standards. The role may also include crisis intervention, psychoeducation for students and caregivers, and contributions to school-wide wellness initiatives.

Qualifications
  • Strong clinical foundation in Psychology and Social Work, with the ability to apply evidence-informed practices in school-based settings.
  • Experience with Treatment Planning and Family Therapy, including assessment, goal setting, and collaborative interventions with caregivers.
  • Skills in Case Management, including care coordination, advocacy, and linkage to community resources for students and families.
  • Relevant professional license or eligibility (e.g., LMSW, LCSW, LMHC, LCAT, School Psychologist) in New York State.
  • Experience working with children and adolescents in educational or community mental health environments.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to partner effectively with school staff and families.
  • Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and gender-neutral practice; multilingual ability (especially Spanish or French) is an asset.
  • Master’s degree or higher in Social Work, Psychology, Counseling, or a related behavioral health field.
